It is a national citation given annually by the forest service’s national office in Washington, D.C. to an ex- ceptional individual who con- tributes outstanding engineer- ing expertise and leadership to a national forest. Martin is the Rogue River-Siskiyou National For- est’s assistant forest engineer. She will travel to the capital to be recognized and pre- sented the award during a ceremony on April 15. “We are extremely proud of what Brenda Martin has accomplished during her ca- reer. This award recognizes her outstanding engineer work,” said Scott Conroy, Rogue River-Siskiyou Na- tional Forest supervisor. “She is sought out by her peers throughout the forest service in Oregon and Washington for her technical expertise and knowledge especially related to construction projects.” Martin has been de- scribed as the cohesive force that holds together the Recrea- tion, Engineering, and Lands group of approximately 40 employees. Since 2002, Mar- tin has been the assistant forest engineer on the 1.8-million acre Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Her role as the program engineer is critical for Engi- neering, Recreation, Lands and Fleet programs on a vast forest with lands that stretch throughout Southwestern Oregon and a portion of Northern California. “This significant award honors Brenda for her true pro- fessionalism and strong com- mitment to public service,” said Conroy. “She is particularly known for her high ethical stan- dards in supporting the forest’s engineering, recreation, heri- tage, lands and fleets pro- grams,” he said. Takilma resident Patrick Farley dies in Interstate 5 accident Well-known Takilma resident Patrick Farley, 64, died in a single-vehicle traffic crash on Interstate 5 near Myrtle Creek on Saturday, March 15, according to The News-Review in Roseburg. His vehicle flipped sev- eral times before coming to rest in a ditch beside I-5 near Weaver Road. Farley was southbound at approximately 5:45 p.m. in a white 1988 Toyota Corolla. He moved into the left lane and drifted into the center grass median, witnesses reported. Farley then jerked back onto the freeway and overcor- rected his steering, sending him across both lanes and into the gravel and grass on the right side of the freeway, said James Cooper, who wit- nessed the accident while northbound on I-5. Oregon State Police said that he was ejected from the vehicle. Police have not deter- mined why Farley’s vehicle left the road, said OSP Sgt. Steve Mitchell. Once the vehi- cle left the pavement, Cooper said it flipped four or five times before coming to rest in a ditch some 100 feet from the freeway near milepost 106. Farley suffered severe injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mitchell said that Farley did not ap- pear to have been wearing a seatbelt.
