Page 7 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, March 12, 2008 Oregon state troopers net $1.5 million in illegal drugs from traffic stops As a result of recent traffic stops, Oregon State Police troopers have confis- cated $1.5 million worth of illegal drugs, primarily co- caine, being transported in vehicles on Interstate 5. Troopers arrested one person last week after they discovered 20 kilos of co- caine hidden in a sport utility vehicle northbound south of Woodburn. The approximate 44 pounds of cocaine has an esti- m a t e d value of $400,000. On March 4 a trooper accompanied by a drug detection canine stopped a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe sport utility vehicle northbound near milepost 268 for speed, lane change, and tinted win- dow violations. During the contact the driver was identified as Sa- bras Rios Ruiz, 25, from Clackamas. During a consent search, the canine helped lo- cate 20 kilos of cocaine in a sophisticated rear false com- partment of the vehicle. Rios Ruiz was taken into custody and lodged on drug charges in Marion County Jail in lieu of $2 million bail. The troopers stopped the vehicle. Three men were ar- rested and OSP seized 21 kilos of cocaine and two pounds of crystal metham- phetamine. Estimated value of the seized drugs is $500,000. On Jan. 19 this year an OSP trooper stopped a 2005 Nissan Armada sport utility vehicle displaying out-of-state license plates northbound near milepost 253 for speed and lane change violations. During contact with the lone occupant, a 26-year old man, the trooper subsequently found 31 kilos of cocaine in a false compartment in the rear cargo area. The approxi- mately 66 pounds of cocaine has an estimated value of $600,000. (Editor’s Note: Factual information for ‘Blotter’ is provided by official law enforcement agencies.
