Page 4 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, February 6, 2008 NFIB: state members against mandated bankroll of leave Oregon small-business owners are against a proposed law that would establish a new payroll deduction to fund a mandated paid family leave program, according to a poll released by their leading rep- resentative group. Each year, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)/Oregon polls its small business mem- bers on the issues vital to their survival as entrepreneurs. The organization has more than 7,000 members in Oregon, and releases the results of its survey after a 5 percent or greater initial return. Asked if they supported a legislative effort to assess them a penny per-employee, per-hour payroll tax to fund a paid family leave program, 87 percent of NFIB-small busi- ness owners said “No,” 6 percent were in favor, and 7 percent were undecided or did not respond. “Small business owners understand that this program is not sustainable at a penny per hour,” said Harlan Levy NFIB/Oregon state director. Other results from the poll showed an 88 percent support for a new require- ment that all new local taxes be approved by local voters. Eight percent opposed the idea, and the remaining were undecided or did not respond. Transportation issues did not fare so well. Only 20 per- cent of NFIB small business owners favored raising Ore- gon’s gasoline tax to pay for transportation infrastructure improvements; 74 were op- posed, and 6 percent were undecided or did not respond. Asked if Oregon’s title and registration fees should be boosted to pay for trans- portation infrastructure im- provements, 72 percent of small-business owners said “No,” 21 percent were in fa- vor, and the balance unde- cided or not responding. Asked if LLCs and S Corps should be included with C Corps and required to pay a minimum corporate tax, 72 percent of respondents said “No,” 16 percent were fine by it, and 12 percent un- decided. Rounding out the poll was a query on the No. 1 is- sue for small businesses for more than two decades: health care. Should all em- ployers should be required to provide health insurance for their employees or pay into a fund that would provide health insurance: Some 84 percent of NFIB/Oregon small business owners said, “No,” 9 percent said “Yes,” and 7 percent were undecided. ‘Gene’ Bennett O’Brien resident Eugene John “Gene” Bennett, 72, died at home Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008. We praise God that we still have religious freedom in our country.
