(I.V, News photos) Tax plan in fund ideas by sheriff Ideas about law efforts requested A room tax and a fee on mined aggregate are among suggestions being reviewed by the Josephine County Sheriff’s Advisory Council (JCSAC) to help fund law enforcement, said Sheriff Gil Gilbertson. “Responses to my most- recent public request included some creative and worthwhile suggestions for funding alter- natives,” he stated. “I for- warded these to JCSAC for further review, and one to collect $1 per ton of aggre- gate mined in the county looks particularly promising. This would not represent a significant percentage of the cost of aggregate, but with approximately 1 million tons mined annually in the county it might be a significant con- tribution. “I also have had the op- portunity to review the New Construction Asset Buy-In Proposal discussed with the county commissioners, and the reaction was generally favorable. “Another idea that seems to have some potential,” said the sheriff, “is a 2 percent room tax on all hotel, motel and camping accommoda- tions in the county. A similar tax is already imposed within Grants Pass at 9 percent and raises more than $1 million per year. “Current state law would require 70 percent of the funds raised to be spent on supporting and promoting (Continued on page 3) The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office is in the proc- ess of creating a 20-year stra- tegic plan, said Sheriff Gil Gilbertson. “A well-considered plan requires all the creativity and analysis we can muster,” he said. “We have surveyed the employees of Josephine County and are now schedul- ing meetings with the public.” He said that his office obtained a random sample of citizens’ names and addresses from the County Clerk’s Of- fice. Those 1,200 citizens were sent postcards inviting them to attend strategic plan- ning meetings. “In those meetings,” said Gilbertson, citizens will iden- tify what levels of service they would like to see, rank those services in importance, and develop a timeline when the goals need to be met. Next, they’ll discuss funding meth- ods for achieving the service levels they’ve identified. “The citizens will be given a survey, similar to the employee survey, to complete during the meeting or to take home to complete. The infor- mation gathered from these meetings will be instrumental in development of a 20-year strategic plan,” the sheriff said. Gilbertson added, “Because there has been a great interest in these meet- ings, we will hold additional meetings where all citizens can attend.
