Preliminary information
from Oregon State Police
indicates that Thanksgiving
holiday period fatalities were
down this year by half, as
four people reportedly died in
four separate traffic crashes
on Oregon highways.
Last year, eight people
died in seven separate
crashes.
According to Oregon
Dept. of Transportation Crash
Analysis and Reporting Unit,
Oregon police agencies re-
ported four fatalities from 6
p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21,
through 11:59 p.m. Sunday,
Nov. 25. The four crashes
involved single vehicles,
three of which left highways
and struck a tree or pole.
On Thursday, Nov. 22,
Marion County Sheriff’s Of-
fice investigated a single-
vehicle traffic crash in the
Illinois River Corridor use fees eyed by forest service
A new recreation fee for
the Illinois River Corridor is
proposed by the U.S. Forest
Service’s Rogue River Siski-
you National Forest.
Forest recreation manag-
ers said that they are inter-
ested in hearing the public’s
comments on a proposal for a
new recreation fee for day-
use on the Illinois River and
for overnight stays at Store
Gulch Campground out Illi-
nois River Road from Selma.
Day-use fees would be
$5 per day per vehicle with
season passes $30 per season.
Campground overnight fees
would be $10 per night per
vehicle.
This fee is being pro-
posed due to a visitor desire
for a quality experience, in-
creased public use, to better
protect the environment
through new facilities, and
the need for law enforcement,
according to Jerry Sirski, rec-
reation manager.
“We recognize how im-
portant these sites are to our
local communities and those
who use the sites,” said Sir-
ski. “These fees will help us
maintain the sites to the level
and quality people have come
to expect.”
Added Joel King, district
ranger, “We have made im-
provements at these sites
based on visitor desires and
feedback. These fees will
help ensure that we can main-
tain these improvements as
expected by those who use
the sites.”
The majority of funds
collected at recreation fee
sites, 80 to 95 percent, remain
in the forest to operate, main-
tain and improve facilities
and programs at the sites.
The new fee proposal
will be posted in the Federal
Register. Additionally, feed-
back has been solicited from
visitors on the river, articles
have been in newspapers, and
interviews have been on local
television news.
All new fee proposals
will be presented before a
citizens advisory committee,
the Pacific Northwest Recrea-
tion Resource Advisory Com-
mittee (RAC). The committee
makes recommendations on
creating new or changing
existing recreation fees man-
aged by the Forest Service
and the Bureau of Land Man-
agement in Oregon and
Washington.
Committee members
represent a broad array of
recreation interest groups and
help ensure that the Forest
Service is proposing reason-
able and publicly acceptable
fee changes, King said.
Resource Advisory Com-
mittee members also help to
make certain that the Forest
Service addresses public is-
sues and concerns about rec-
reation fees. The public is
welcome to attend and com-
ment at all advisory commit-
tee meetings.
Advice and recommen-
dations from the Pacific
Northwest Recreation Re-
source Advisory Committee
are combined with other pub-
lic notification and communi-
cation efforts to help the
agencies make sound deci-
sions regarding recreation
fees, noted King.
During 2004, Congress
passed the Federal Lands
Recreation Enhancement Act.
It allows the Forest Service to
keep 95 percent of fees col-
lected at certain recreation
sites and use these funds lo-
cally to operate and maintain
and improve these sites.
For more information,
questions or comments about
any of these new fee propos-
als, contact Sirski at 26568
Redwood Hwy., Cave Junc-
tion; or phone (541) 899-
3815. King can be contacted
at 592-4001.
Silverton area that resulted in
the death of the driver when
his vehicle struck a tree.
Also Nov. 22, Washing-
ton County Sheriff’s Office
investigated a single-vehicle
fatal traffic crash involving a
motorcycle on S.W. Spring-
ville Road.
On Saturday, Nov. 24,
Portland Police Bureau inves-
tigated a single-vehicle crash
near Gurtz Road that resulted
in the death of a passenger
and injuries to two other oc-
cupants when their vehicle
crashed into a utility pole.
On Nov. 25, Marion
County Sheriff’s Office in-
vestigated a single-vehicle
accident on Culver Drive S.E.
in the Salem area that resulted
in the death of the driver. The
vehicle reportedly left the
roadway and went down an
embankment where it struck
several trees.
OSP troopers did not
investigate any fatal crashes
on state freeways or secon-
dary state highways.
OSP troopers arrested 61
DUII drivers, down slightly
from last year's 68 reported
DUII arrests. The OSP
Klamath Falls Area Com-
mand office, which partici-
pated in a Klamath County
interagency DUII enhanced
enforcement effort during the
weekend, far exceeded any
other OSP office by reporting
19 DUII arrests.
Salem, Bend, and Grants
Pass OSP offices reported
five DUII arrests each.
OSP troopers also issued
nearly 1,300 speed-related
citations; responded to nearly
200 traffic crashes; and as-
sisted more than 400 disabled
motorists.
Eschew winter stagnation
By JoANNE STONE
Elder stereotypes and
scare tactics abound. We are
taught to worry about osteo-
porosis and dementia.
“Worry (overthinking)
leads to 1,000 diseases.”
Western medicine would
agree, and we are bombarded
with advertisements regarding
elements of “healthy living.”
Take this pill. Have this
test. Take the vaccine. Do a
colon cleanse.
But what about real life?
-- the percentage of the time
you have in your body, and
making daily choices affect-
ing your health.
Health is a cumulative
effort, and the choices we
make today are like a bank
account. Do we take care, or
squander our reserves?
We all have positive hab-
its to build on. Let’s just
make them more active. If
you become ill or “overdo,”
the author is available for
treatment.
Tips To Stay Active
In Cool Weather
*Dress warmly and
“cozy.” Wear a hood and at
least a stadium-length coat to
prevent the cold from pene-
trating joints and organs.
*Make it easy. Walk
slowly; take your coffee and
the dog. Have a heart-to-heart
talk with a friend.
*Waterproof, or take
your “window” when it’s dry,
for outdoor activities.
*Exercise near home.
Find new places.
*Drive above the clouds
for a walk if the weather
seems dreary, or visit the
coast.
*Avoid alcohol and hy-
pothermia.
*Stay inspired.
