Fathers Day concert scheduled
A free Fathers Day con-
cert will be presented by the 3
Rivers Chorale on Sunday,
June 17 at Immanuel United
Methodist Church, 200 W.
Watkins St. in Cave Junction.
The concert is designed
so that families can enjoy
great choral music, madrigals
and more, said Dave Marston,
conductor/music director.
Donna Corrigan is the accom-
panist.
The 30-member group
will perform Frostiana, a
group of songs for mixed
chorus, men’s chorus and
women’s chorus with words
by Robert Frost and music by
Randall Thompson. Music by
G. F. Handel, John Dowling
and more also will be sung.
Refreshments will be
served after the concert. The
concert is free, but donations
“will be gratefully accepted to
help defray costs of hall rental
and music.”
‘Bittersweet Canyon’ author
Cushing book-signing Friday
Laurence A. “Larry” Cushing, a retired judge and former
Illinois Valley resident, has written Bittersweet Canyon, a
novel recalling many events of his life in Eastern Oregon.
Cushing, 82, will hold a book-signing Friday, June 15
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Century 21 Harris & Taylor
at Redwood Hwy. and Lister Street in Downtown Cave Junc-
tion. Of the book, Cushing’s first, one reviewer wrote:
“In Bittersweet Canyon (he) tells an exciting family story
of pioneer farming in Oregon, brutal struggles with the land
and human adversaries, legal conflicts, gold mining and the
collapse and fulfillment of romance … from World War II
naval air combat to the present.
“This vivid saga resonates with Cushing’s experience,
successfully blending true events with dramatic story-telling
skill.”
Cushing, now a Grants Pass resident who first came to
Cave Junction in 1952, was instrumental in many civic im-
provements, including what became Illinois Valley Rural Fire
Protection District. He also helped form a chamber of com-
merce, and improve the area roadway system.
Maria Pilar Field Merono
Maria Pilar Field Merono was born June 3, 2007 weighing 8
pounds. She is the daughter of Ed and Pilar Field, and joins her
sister, Paloma, from Cartagena, Spain.
Grandparents are Kathleen Kennedy Field from Cave Junc-
tion, and Pedro and Pilar Merono from Cartagena.
Ed Field, a graduate of Illinois Valley High School, is for-
mer manager of Shop Smart Food Warehouse in Cave Junction.

used regularly. Or, if you
dare, a daily sandwich of
whole-wheat bread, raw yel-
low onion, a half-inch of
horseradish, slice of meat,
cheddar cheese, and brown
mustard.
