ACTIVE LIVING EXPO - An event for senior citi-
zens of all ages, Active Living Expo ‘07, will be held Satur-
day, June 9 at the Ship Ashore Resort upstairs lounge in
Smith River, Calif. The event will include wine-and-cheese
tasting, and music by Lon Goddard & Aura Wright. See the

PARK PEAK PERFORMERS - Free, live music
gigs, sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce,
will begin Thursday, June 14 in Jubilee Park in Cave Junc-
tion. “Jefferson” will open the annual Concerts in the Park
series. Shows will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Food and
beverages will be available. For June 21, Nicole Navarro

‘LOVE THAT DAD’ - Lovejoy Hospice is accepting
registrations until Wednesday, June 13 for the free Fri-
day, June 15 Fathers Day Memorial Workshop from
noon to 2 p.m. at the hospice office, 939 S.E. Eighth St.,
Grants Pass. The workshop “will guide participants in
creating beautiful collages suitable for framing as keep-
sakes and memorials.” Participants should bring photos
of their fathers and any magazines or other items to use
as resources for collage material. For information or to

JUNIOR GOLF TIME - Signups for the annual low-
cost Junior Golf program at Illinois Valley Golf Course will
be taken Saturday, June 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the
course. Youth 5 through 7 can register from 9 to 10:30 a.m.;
those 8 to 10 from 10:30 to noon; and those 11 to 15 from
noon to 1:30 p.m. That schedule will be in effect every
Thursday for five weeks. On Thursday of the sixth week the
annual awards luncheon will be held. For more information

‘SAVOR THE VALLEY’ - Due to a schedule conflict,
the second annual wine-tasting and benefit auction date for
Siskiyou Community Health Center has been changed to
July 21. As last year, the event will be held at Bridgeview
Vineyards Winery on Holland Loop. Proceeds are used to
help support medical and dental services for children in

WHERE’S WALDO (PLAQUE)? - O’Brien resident
Jim Lombardo, a 34-year Illinois Valley resident, is aiming
with his wife, Kathy, to some day replace the stolen bronze
historical plaque for the town of Waldo. Some jerks ripped it
off from the rock stand on Waldo Road a few years back.
Meanwhile, Lombardo is temporarily using a laminated sign
at the site. It has all the wording from the original plaque,
noting among other facts, that Waldo was the first territorial
seat for Josephine County. Waldo existed from approxi-
mately 1852 to 1927.
‘CYCLE SAFETY SERIES - The Team Oregon
Motorcycle Safety Program is sponsoring a Rider Skills
Practice course in Medford on Saturdays, June 16 and July
7. This four-hour course is for all active motorcyclists and
emphasizes skills development for cornering, braking,
swerving and slow-speed maneuvers. The course also pre-
sents street-riding strategies for the special situations that
riders face. Student-owned motorcycles are required, and
proof of insurance and a valid motorcycle-endorsed driver
license are required. Preregistration also is required. There

United Way will end operations

everything possible to mini-
mize the impact on agencies
and other service providers.
“We have asked for help
from United Way of Jackson
County, and they have ex-
pressed support for our deci-
sion, and a willingness to
assist us in the dissolution.”
Bartow added, “It’s vital
to remember that donations to
United Way of Josephine
County through 2007 will go
to their intended agencies,
and that all the monies col-
lected in Josephine County
will stay in Josephine County
to strengthen this commu-
nity.”
He also said that the en-
tire board of directors appre-
ciates “the people in this
community for their 54 years
of donations, volunteering
and for all their support.”
Following the announce-
ment of dissolution, the
United Way board received a
letter from its member agen-
cies, which read:
“United Way of Jose-
phine County may be ending,
however, the needs of the
community are not, and as
dedicated agencies, we will
continue to provide the sig-
nificant programs and ser-
vices needed by our commu-
nity members.
“As agencies we remain
committed to the effective
collaboration, support and
partnerships we have devel-
oped that allow us to deliver
these necessary services, as
efficiently and effectively as
we have in the past.
“With this commitment
to the community to continue
to provide necessary services,
we recognize that agencies
will need continued commu-
nity support. As a result of this
change, a dialogue between
the community and these ser-
vice agencies will be a critical
element in determining how
this support will occur.”
Ronan noted, that, “The
Illinois Valley Family Coali-
tion is the only Illinois
Valley-based agency that was
part of the United Way (UW)
of Josephine County. The
coalition was a new agency to
UW, just having been made a
partner within the last year.

the coalition though 2007 will
still be paid to the coalition,
but after that, it seems we will
no longer have those dona-
tions to help provide services
to residents of Illinois Valley.
“During the coalition’s
first year with UW,” said
Ronan, “it received $416.69
from United Way. At the end
of our first year, we were
eligible to request specific
funding for one of our pro-
grams, and we submitted a
request for $6,000 to support
our Teen Work Program.
“With this closure, it
appears we will receive little
to no funding for that pro-
gram,” she said.
