Page 5 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, May 23, 2007 Dinner, music, dancing for Granny Aggie in Takilma If only I knew then what I know now… Fund-raiser for Pilgrim and the ‘Thirteen Grandmothers’ will be held Saturday, May 26 A fund-raiser to benefit the work of Illinois Valley and Josephine County digni- tary and world-renowned spiritual leader, Grandmother Agnes Baker Pilgrim, will be held Saturday, May 26 at 6 p.m. at the Takilma Commu- nity Bldg. “Darryl Cherney and the Patriot Act” will perform highly danceable music at 8:30 p.m., and a dinner of linguini or quiche will be served, with desserts after. “A high-quality arts and services raffle also will be a feature at the nonalcoholic event,” said sponsors. Famous for her inclusive and nonjudgmental manner and known affectionately as “everybody’s Grandma,” Grandmother Aggie will take the stage after dinner and relate tales about her recent travels. She recently met with the Dalai Lama and spread her message of hope for the world and all its inhabitants -- human and nonhuman. “I am trying to teach reciprocity,” she says. “We two-leggeds are always tak- ing and rarely giving back. Without reciprocity, the bal- ance of nature is thrown off.” She is also the eldest member and chairman of “The International Council of Thirteen Grandmothers,” a global alliance of prayer, edu- cation and healing for “our shared Earth, all inhabitants human and nonhuman; in- cluding the plant and insect kingdoms.” The Grandmoth- ers -- deeply concerned about the destruction of Earth’s natural systems and indige- nous ways of life -- are women of prayer and action; working together to serve common goals as well as sup- port their specific local con- cerns. Currently, the 13 Grand- mothers are striving to gain an audience with the Pope, and in June, they will make a pilgrimage to the Pine Ridge Lakota Reservation, one of the most impoverished Native American nations in America. The Thirteen Grand- mothers have published a book “that is enjoying a won- derful reception and is in high demand.” Copies of the book, “Grandmothers Counsel the World,” will be available, and Grandmother Aggie will autograph copies for anyone who purchases one during the fund-raiser. Grandmother Aggie trav- els extensively on her own and with the Grandmothers. Through her tireless work for humanity and the environ- ment, she accrues many ex- penses; thus this benefit seeks Sign up now for June Classes including: to ease her financial burden, “to help free her up to focus on what she does best; shin- ing a powerful spiritual light that benefits us all.” She is the oldest surviv- ing Takelma Elder living in Southwestern Oregon. The Takelma people populated this region for thousands of years, “although it took only four years to destroy the cul- ture after miners arrived on the shores of S.W. Oregon.” Grandmother Aggie is the Keeper of the Sacred Salmon Ceremony for her people. In 1994, she revived the ceremony after it had been lost for more than 150 years, because many Takelma people were killed and the survivors forced onto their “Trail of Tears” and relocated to the Siletz reservation. Grandmother Aggie’s grand- father was the first chief of the Siletz Confederation of Tribes. This year the Salmon Ceremony will be held June 2 in Gold Hill. It is open to the public and is held to honor the salmon people and ex- press gratitude for their giv- ing their lives to feed human- ity. All assembled pray for the continued existence of the precious salmon runs. Fund-raiser sponsors also noted, “One quality that makes Grandmother Aggie beloved by thousands is how assessable she is to everyone, regardless of race, religion or politics. She is an exception- ally clear and strong speaker whose no-nonsense eloquent style has touched people of many different cultures in the United States and around the world.” She says, “We must all work together to combat spiritual blindness, and more so today than ever before.” Confidential Abortion Recovery Services Pregnancy Center ~~ 592-6058 www.pregnancycenteriv.org Dad, Mom, Jeremiah, Sally, Steve, Terri Vendors in OLCC program check ID better than others Alcohol sellers in the Oregon Liquor Control Commission’s Responsible Vendor Program (RVP) are doing a good job of check- ing the IDs of younger- looking buyers, according to a statewide research study. But, nonRVP grocery and convenience store clerks didn’t fare as well during the test – failing to ask a young-looking alcohol customer for ID approxi- mately 40 percent of the time. Clerks at liquor and drug stores did better, how- ever, checking the ID of the young buyers approximately 86 percent of the time. Some 385 Oregon liq- uor licensees were visited during 2005 by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation’s (PIRE) Preven- tion Research Center and the Oregon Research Insti- tute. During the study, young-looking 21-year-olds attempted to buy a six pack of beer without an ID card. State law requires an ID check when persons who look 26 or younger buy alcohol. Researchers wanted to pinpoint the types of outlets that are likely to sell to youngsters, so they can sug- gest strategies for reducing alcohol sales to minors.
