These hazard trees are dead or have advanced root diseases that could endanger campers and hikers. “Removing these haz- ard trees around camp- grounds and roads could protect property and poten- tially save a life,” he said. USFS is proposing to fall or pull over the hazard trees and place them in the adjacent stream to enhance salmon habitat on Sucker Creek. These trees in streams can provide shade and cover for fish and pro- vide habitat vital for aquatic species. The purpose of the pro- posed action is to conserve the big tree values of the area in a natural- appearing condition while keeping the campground Visa & MasterCard Accepted safe for the public. In a related project, the district is proposing to fur- ther enhance salmon habitat by pulling some ad- jacent tree snags into Sucker Creek. The present condi- tion for Sucker Creek lacks habitat diversity of large wood. This action would provide homes for water plants and animals, spawn- ing gravels, pools, and hid- ing cover for fish. Grayback Campground, located 12 miles east of Cave Junction along Hwy. 46 (Caves Hwy.) is one of the more popular camping areas. It is situated in a beautiful forest setting with many old-growth trees and is adjacent to a prolific salmon stream Sucker Creek. It is a popular place to camp and features a 1- mile loop trail and swim- ming. Those with concerns or thoughts to share with USFS should respond by Monday, April 9, via emailing jtking@fs.fed.us or write King or Ian Reid at Wild Rivers Ranger District, 26568 Redwood Hwy., Cave Junction OR 97523.
