Two of three suspects in Kerby home invasion arrested
Updated information
about a home invasion by
armed, masked men in
Kerby reveals that two vic-
tims were injured, and that
two suspects have been ar-
rested while a third still is
being sought, said Josephine
County Sheriff’s Office.
In county jail on
charges of first-degree rob-
bery and first-degree assault
are Cary L. Culp, 22, of
Birch Drive in rural Cave
Junction; and Brent L.
McCaslin, 21, a city of Cave
Junction resident.
The third suspect hasn’t
been apprehended, said
Sheriff Gil Gilbertson. All
three suspects wore black
ski masks, he said.
Injured in the early
morning incident on School
Street were Richard H.
Schaller, 57; and his son,
Richard Schaller Jr., 25. the
elder Schaller reportedly
suffered serious injuries, but
the extent of his son’s inju-
ries was unclear.
New information, based
on a court affidavit, indicates
that the victims were re-
strained with plastic
“handcuffs” known as “zip
ties.” Reasons for the home
invasion haven’t come out yet.
A 1999 four-door Buick
Century was stolen during
the incident. Its Oregon li-
cense plate is YNJ 041.
There are no indications
that the younger Schaller’s
wife or their three young
children were harmed.
Investigation is continu-
ing, said JCSO.
Merlin resident’s wife dead at scene of two-car traffic crash
A Merlin woman was
dead at the scene of a traffic
accident on Galice Road,
and her husband, and two
persons in another vehicle,
all from Merlin, were in-
jured Friday, March 16, said
Josephine County Sheriff’s
Office (JCSO).
The crash occurred at
approximately 9 a.m. at the
intersection of Galice Road
and Azalea Drive.
Pronounced dead at the
scene by medical personnel
was Sara Elizabeth Rowen,
87. Her husband, James
Alan Rowen, 88, was taken
by Mercy Flights medical
evacuation helicopter to
Rogue Valley Medical Cen-
ter in Medford. He was re-
ported in serious, but stable,
condition.
He was driving a Honda
Accord, and turned in front
of a Ford Bronco driven by
Frederick G. Sharp, 59, said
JCSO. He was taken by
American Medical Re-
sponse (AMR) ambulance
to Three Rivers Community
Hospital (TRCH) in Grants
Pass. He was reported in
fair/stable condition.
His passenger, identi-
fied as Jason A. Sharp, 21,
also was transported by
AMR to TRCH. He was
treated for minor injuries
and released, said JCSO.
Investigation into the
crash continues, according
to JSCO.

2 GP transients stabbed;
murder attempt logged
Two transients in the city of Grants Pass were attacked by
a man with two knives, and the suspect is wanted on two
counts of attempted murder, said Grants Pass Dept. of Public
Safety (GPDPS).
The incident, which occurred near 144 N.E. Terry Drive
off Grants Pass Parkway, was reported Saturday, March 17 at
4:30 p.m.
The suspect is Kenneth G. Snow Jr., 42, known as
“Dirk,” and he also is believed to be a transient. He was riding
a blue mountain bicycle with forward handle rest extensions.
He was carrying a blue backpack and hat.
He was wearing a plain sleeveless gray T-shirt, blue
jeans, dark-colored shoes, and a black baseball cap with white
writing in a circular pattern on the front.
The suspect is 5-7 and weighs 160 pounds. He has brown
hair, with a full, bushy and distinctive dark mustache and
beard. He has arm and chest tattoos including a swastika on
his chest surrounded by the words “Weiss Macht” (White
Power).
GPDPS added that the suspect and the two victims were
involved in a dispute, and that he attacked them.
He first attacked Joseph M. Sturges, 46, stabbing him
once in his heart. As Sturges fell, the suspect attacked Joseph
M. Spruitenburg, 47. He sliced him once on his left arm, and
then stabbed his sternum.
Sturges was in critical condition at Three Rivers Commu-
nity Hospital with a punctured lung and two holes in his heart,
said GPDPS. His companion was treated and released.
