Page 7 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, March 21, 2007 ‘Lost’ wildflower art displayed at Jefferson State By DOROTHEA HOVER-KRAMER Imagine inheriting a collection of rare wildflower paintings completed by your great-grandmother 70 years ago. Imagine also having relatives who thought the album was lost, and being able to surprise them with it. Imagine the thrill of having the paintings scanned, enlarged and framed into a workable, at- tractive, well-received ex- hibit at the Lady Bird John- son Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas for three months last fall. And imagine now the excitement of bringing the pictures to be exhibited in Cave Junction where valley artist, naturalist and writer Linda Corey, owner of the pictures, now lives. The exhibit will con- tinue as part of Cave Junc- tion’s Second Friday Art Walk through April 13 at Jefferson State Financial Group, 221-C S. Redwood Hwy. in Cave Junction (the “green office building”). A reception sponsored by Jef- ferson State Financial Group will be held there on April 13 during the first Art Walk of the year. Hallie Barrickman’s collection of wildflower paintings was made with tempera paints and a fine sable brush on black con- struction paper during 1935. At that time, Eula White- house, of the University of Texas Natural History Mu- seum, became interested and offered enthusiastic encour- agement. Barrickman used the illustrations to teach her family and children about the beauty and diversity of Nature. She was a knowl- edgeable herbalist and well- versed in plant and mush- room identification. Recalled her grand- daughter, Barbara Ash Clark: “We lived on un- paved Kenwood Avenue in Sculpter Hicklin reception at SOG gallery set for Saturday, March 24 By JOYCE ABRAMS The public can enjoy afternoon refreshments and meet artist Mallory Hicklin during a reception Saturday, March 24 at the Southern Oregon Guild Gallery in the RCC Belt Bldg. in Kerby. Austin in the mid-1930s, and she and I would walk along Kenwood to collect samples along the edge of the street. “On one occasion she found a small orchid which gave her a lot of pleasure (this flower is part of the collection). My own favorite is the mountain pinks.” Barrickman was born Harriet Love Theobald on March 11, 1870 on a planta- tion near Vicksburg, Miss. She died in Texas on July 2, 1939. Her father, Nathaniel Bacon Theobald, a former captain in the Confederate Army, and her mother, died in a yellow fever epidemic near Vicksburg in 1872. She was adopted by her uncle, and graduated from Louisville Female Normal School. She then taught in Louisville schools. Later she met Wilhoite C. Barrickman, whom she married in 1897. Their chil- dren, Elizabeth and Harriet, were born in Louisville early in the 1900s. The fam- ily moved to Texas in 1906 and settled in Dallas, where Hallie’s father, a journalist and newspaper publisher, wrote for the Dallas Dis- patch and other papers. Barrickman helped found the Camp Fire Girls in Dallas and worked with the Dallas PTA and the Congress of Mothers. In 1930 she moved to Austin, where their daughters were living. She became active as a troop leader in the Girl Scouts. She was a summer nature counselor at nearby Camp Blanco. Her knowledge of birds, plants, stars and Indian lore allowed her to educate her young students broadly. But none of this infor- mation tells the real story of Barrickman’s significance to her family. Because of her all- inclusive love and wisdom she became the center of the family “constellation,” guid- ing its members to be far better people than they would have been otherwise. She “encoded” her grand- children and great- grandchildren with a drive to live as part of Nature. The exhibit is presented by Hallie’s great- granddaughter, Linda Clark Corey, of Cave Junction, who has kept these treasured paintings in their original “photo album” for decades. The wildflowers may be familiar to viewers, as most are found in many parts of the United States and cer- tainly in S.W. Oregon. For more information, contact Corey at 592-6126.
