Five men cited in Medford prostitution sting
Medford Police Dept.
(MPD) officers cited five
men following an under-
cover prostitution sting
which focused on nabbing
“johns,” those who solicit
prostitutes.
Two of the five are Illi-
nois Valley residents.
The operation involved
a female informant, who
posed as an “escort service,”
MPD said. The service was
advertised on “craigslist,” an
Internet bulletin board.
MPD Lt. Tim George
said that more than 30 men
made inquiries to the list
wanting to hire the escort.
Seven men made contact
with the escort at a hotel.
Five of the respondents
subsequently agreed to a fee
or offered money for sex,
George said. The others left
before striking a deal.
Cited to appear in Jack-
son County Circuit Court on
charges of prostitution were
Jeffrey R. Blum, 50, of Cen-
tral Point; Jeremiah N. Ship-
ley, 36, of Grants Pass; Jesse
F. Williamson, 30, of Med-
ford; Jose Gonzolo Betata,
62, of Selma; and Robert B.
Schumacher, 56, of Kerby.
Medford Police Dept.
intends to continue to moni-
tor “sexually oriented” busi-
nesses to ensure that they
are not violating Oregon
law, said George.
Suspect held in fake explosive case at TV studio
A man charged in con-
nection with nearly a four-
hour standoff and confronta-
tion with lawmen involving
fake explosives atop his van
in front of a Downtown
Medford TV station remains
in custody.
The suspect is identified
as Mark Allen Dickey, 49,
believed to be a former resi-
dent of Cave Junction and
Grants Pass. The incident
occurred Wednesday, Feb. 7
at Station KTVL.
He was in Jackson
County Jail in lieu of bail.
Indications are that he had
been living in his van.
He was taken into cus-
tody under a peace officer’s
mental hold. And he was
cited on charges of disor-
derly conduct, menacing,
and possession of a hoax
explosive device.
It is reported that the
suspect was unhappy with
the Jackson D.A.’s office in
connection with a matter
involving a woman ac-
quaintance. Dickey has
pleaded not guilty.

PICKUP INTO MOBILE HOME - Gary M. Phillips, 54, of
1770 White Schoolhouse Road, was arrested by Deputy
Steven V. Clarke, of Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, under a peace officer’s mental
hold Sunday, Feb. 11 after he phoned 911 to report that he had purposely driven his
pickup truck into his single-wide mobile home. Illinois Valley Fire District, American
Medical Response (AMR) and Clarke responded at 11:20 a.m. The vehicle knocked over
approximately half the concrete pilings that served as foundation for the home. A
neighbor said that he heard an engine revving, and then a loud crash, as though the mo-
bile home had been raised and dropped a foot. AMR took Phillips to Three Rivers Com-
munity Hospital in Grants Pass. (Photo by ‘Illinois Valley News’)
