A Great Big Wreck
People worry about asteroids. If one hits Earth—ouch! But
that’s nothing: How would you like to be hit by a whole galaxy?
It could happen. The Andromeda Galaxy is heading in our di-
rection. The Andromeda Galaxy is a great spiral of billions of stars.
It looks a lot like our own gal-
axy, the Milky Way. In about 3
billion years, astronomers say,
the Milky Way and Andromeda
will crash together. Earth will
be in the middle of a really big
wreck.
Don’t worry. Getting hit by
a galaxy isn’t so bad. Consider
the following: A spiral galaxy
contains hundreds of billions of
stars. Between the stars are
great gaps of emptiness. When
The ‘Antennae’ galaxies
you throw two galaxies to-
gether, very few of the stars actually hit each other. They pass un-
harmed through the empty gaps.
A NASA space telescope named GALEX has been watching
galaxies collide. GALEX stands for Galaxy Evolution Explorer. It
is not as famous as that other space telescope—the Hubble—but
GALEX is a powerful telescope, too.
Astronomers using GALEX have a favorite pair of colliding
galaxies: “the Antennae.” The Antennae galaxies are passing
through each other. The stars are not hitting, but wild things are
happening. The two galaxies are being stretched by gravity into
strange shapes that look like antennas on top of an ant’s head.
Weird! GALEX is giving astronomers a beautiful view of this col-
lision and many others.
Will the Milky Way and Andromeda end up looking like a
strange cosmic bug? GALEX is working on the answer.
Find out what else GALEX can see at spaceplace.nasa.gov/en/
kids/galex/whats_older.
