(Photo by Michelle Binker/‘Illinois Valley News’) Hair of the Dog beverage ‘hangover remedy’ When Red Bull splashed onto the U.S. mar- ket during the height of the dot-com mania in the mid- 1990s, it heralded a new day for the beverage industry -- one that was not going to be fueled solely by alcohol and soda, but by a new type of thirst-quencher. Today, caffeinated en- ergy drinks still enjoy an enormous amount of suc- cess, capturing $3 billion worth of business in the $93 billion U.S. domestic bever- age industry. Now, one company, Innovative Technologies Corp. of America, is taking on the “big boys of energy drinks” by introduc- ing several new beverages called Hair of the Dog. The name is derived from the concept of eliminating a hangover by drinking more of the same the next day. Hair of the Dog energy formula does not contain alcohol; however, it can alleviate the side effects of alcohol by nutritionally supporting the detoxification process. It contains 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C, as well as B vitamins, ginseng and milk thistle. It also de- livers 3,200 milligrams of Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxi- fiers, which target the liver. Myers, 36, walked into the Illinois Val- ley Substation and an- nounced that he had a war- rant and would like a court date. A deputy obligingly Thinning Oregon’s overly dense forests and util- izing the woody biomass for renewable energy production can restore forest health and wildlife habitat, increase jobs and revitalize rural econo- mies, Oregon leaders in for- estry, utilities, the environ- ment and government agreed. Additionally, Cave Junc- tion and Grants Pass are among areas identified for biomass power opportunities. More than 250 people attended a recent daylong Oregon Woody Biomass con- ference preceding the Oregon Business Summit in Portland, where woody forest biomass also was on the agenda. Biomass as a new dimen- sion of managing forests was noted by Allyn Ford, chief executive officer of Roseburg Forest Products Co., and a director of the Oregon Busi- ness Council. “This approach,” he said, “can increase jobs and boost the forest sector’s contribu- tion to the economy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and reduce the risk of uncharacteristically severe fires that threaten our federal forests. “Generating renewable electric energy and transpor- tation biofuels from woody biomass is key to a ‘triple win’ strategy of meeting renewable energy and carbon emission goals, providing jobs in rural communities and restoring health to over- stocked, fire-prone forests,” Ford said. Added Russ Hoeflich, it was said that two men driving a panel truck took the animal away, the owner reported. *The fuel line on a school bus parked on E. River Street was cut and a quarter tank of gas si- phoned, a driver said. *Following a distur- bance in Downtown CJ dur- ing which an intoxicated man was said to be fighting with a woman; Carrie Lynn Thoms, 36, was cited a war- rant charging FTA on a charge of third-degree theft and lodged in county jail. *Kathleen Ann Nickell, 63, was cited on a charge of domestic menacing and lodged in county jail. What kind of foundation are YOU setting for the future? vice president and Oregon director of The Nature Con- servancy, “We must unite to strive for and develop a statewide vision of our forests and a bold plan to get there.” The statewide effort needs to be led by the gover- nor and the congressional delegation, Hoeflich said, while parallel efforts at local levels are needed to fully en- gage affected communities. The Nature Conservancy is advocating forest restora- tion that could bring back healthy conditions and provide an economic boost at the same time by creating jobs in rural Oregon commu- nities, Hoeflich said. In Ore- gon, he said, more than 21 million acres, including 13.5 million acres of public land, most of it federally owned, needs active treatment. Hoeflich said that restor- ing forests to healthy condi- tions will require treatment -- active fire management or biomass removal -- of 500,000 to 600,000 acres annually during the next 20 to 25 years, three to five times the current level. The conference explored findings of a new woody bio- mass study commissioned by the Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI). A map from the study identifies areas in the state where biomass, transportation access, the power grid and existing bio- mass facilities overlap. The map shows major opportunities for Oregon in the communities of Cave Junction, Grant Pass, Med- ford, Glendale/Riddle, Roseburg/Glide, Klamath Falls, Lakeview, Gilchrist, Warm Springs, John Day/Prairie City, LaGrande/ Elgin and Wallo wa/ Enterprise. Citing the study, Mike Cloughesy, OFRI director of forestry, said, “In the near term, thinning the most acces- sible timber stands in eastern and interior South- west Oregon allows the har- vest of about 600,000 tons of biomass annually, enough to produce 81 megawatts of electricity at the competitive cost of 6.5-cents per kilowatt hour.” Stan Watters, senior vice president of the electric utility PacifiCorp, said “Biomass is a renewable resource in our own backyard, and it will have an important role in meeting our customers’ future energy needs.” Conference participants also heard the recommenda- tions of the Oregon Forest Biomass Working Group, formed by Gov. Kulongoski, to improve forest health by accelerating the use of forest woody biomass as a value- added commodity and energy supply. The working group’s recommendations describe the path needed to address forest health concerns through the reduction of ex- cess fuel loadings, particu- larly on federal land, while using some of the biomass to help Oregon meet its renew- able energy goals. The woody biomass con- ference, held at the World Forestry Center, was co- sponsored by OFRI, the Ore- gon Business Council, The Nature Conservancy, the En- ergy Trust of Oregon, the Oregon Forest Industries Council, and the Oregon For- est Biomass Working Group.
