Toy program: ‘The need is greater than ever’ With holidays right around the corner, charitable organizations stress that it isn’t too early to begin thinking about giving. The Illinois Valley Christmas Basket/Toy pro- gram is one such entity, striving to meet a swelling demand for social services. The need, it’s said, is greater than ever. Cilia Siemer, who coor- dinates the basket program through Illinois Valley Fam- ily Resource Center, stated that applications for the toy program are distributed to current food stamp recipi- ents. Last year the baskets were distributed to some 690 families. This year the number of potential applicants has in- creased by 300, Siemer said. Nearly 1,200 families in Illinois Valley currently re- ceive food stamps. Many are recent arrivals from out-of-state. Often they’re families with chil- dren, and having moved to Oregon, have found no em- ployment opportunities. December’s First Friday, Crèche Fest herald Yule events in Grants Pass A festive First Friday Art Night will ring in the Yuletide season on Dec. 1, and in conjunction, The Grants Pass Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold its annual Crèche Festival. The open gathering in the cultural hall at the Grants Pass Stake Center, at 1969 Williams Hwy., is free and open to the public. It will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Live music will be pro- vided, with special perform- ances by Hidden Valley High School’s brass ensem- ble; and Grants Pass High School’s string ensemble, as well as its choir ensemble, Sounds Unlimited. Refresh- “Multifamily house- holds are growing more common,” Siemer said, re- lating what she hears about increased costs her clients face for housing and other essentials. The organization is striving to encourage family time, outdoor activities and reading with its gift give- away. To this end the pro- gram will provide each child with a book, an outdoor toy and a game the family can play together. The I.V. Christmas Bas- ket/Toy program relies on donations of cash, toys and time to successfully serve Illinois Valley families. “All donations stay in the Illinois Valley,” Siemer stressed in a recent request letter. “100 percent of funds collected are used to pur- chase toys.” To donate or volunteer, phone Siemer at I.V.
