Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, November 1, 2006 Page 19 Breast cancer treatable if caught early A RECENT FLUE FIRE at a Hogue Drive residence to which Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) crews responded is a reminder to have those chimneys cleaned before the wood-burning season. Said Don Crole of ‘The Chimney Sweep,’ “There is no such thing as a ‘friendly’ chimney fire that will safely clean out your flue. With a roar like a freight train, it can crack open flueliner and chimney and spread to the structure of the house. Both a cool flue and steam from green or wet wood encourage condensation of creosote. A creosote fire can burn with a blast-furnace intensity that it sets off this frightening chain of events: Crumbling and cracking mortar; balls of flaming creosote shoot out of the chimney top onto the roof; clay-tile fluelin- ers crack open; stainless steel liners warp, buckle and separate at the seams; masonry in the chimney expands with such force that sec- tions of the chimney can blow out; flames can spread to the structure or roof of the house and even explode into the room. In the event of flue fire, get everyone out of the house. Fire can flash right through the structure with incredible speed. Phone the fire agency from a safe distance. Do not try to put out the fire and do not hesitate leave imme- diately.” (Photos by Dale & Elaine Sandberg, IVFD Media Dept.) This year, 213,000 women and 1,700 men will learn that they have the dis- ease. If caught early, breast cancer can be readily treated and often cured. Years ago, the only treat- ment for breast cancer was surgical removal of the entire breast, a procedure called a mastectomy. Now, doctors can allow most women with early stage cancer to keep their breasts by performing a lum- pectomy (surgical removal of the tumor) and following up with radiation therapy and sometimes chemotherapy. Studies show that breast- conserving surgery, plus radia- tion therapy, is just as good as a mastectomy -- and may be preferred by many women. After a lumpectomy, most patients will undergo external beam radiation ther- apy, which involves a series of daily outpatient treatments to accurately deliver radiation to the entire breast. Each treat- ment lasts less than 30 min- utes; treatments are given five days a week for five to seven weeks.
