The Gospel Reading on
Sunday, Sept. 10 will be from
Mark, and contains these famil-
iar words spoken by Jesus,
“Whoever wishes to come after
me must deny himself, take up
his cross, and follow me. For
whoever wishes to save his life
will lose it, but whoever loses
his life for my sake and that of
the gospel will save it.”
Jesus expects his followers
to accept their trials in life and
carry on in faith and trust.

Mr. Vernon was born on
May 15, 1918 in Spur, Texas.
He was a retired supervisor for
a California orange-packing
house. He served as a drill in-
structor in the U.S. Marine
Corps during World War II.
Mr. Vernon moved to
Illinois Valley in 1940 from
Ontario, Calif. He built his own
home in the valley, and was
known as “an awesome man,
who never had a bad word to
say about anyone.” He enjoyed
having a garden.
He is survived by two
sons, Carl F. Higby, of
Fontana, Calif., and Clyde A.
Higby, of Nevada; a daughter,
Pat Tweedy, of Cave Junction;
six grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.

We are looking forward to
the MAP (Most Amazing
Prophecies) series that will
begin Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
with Pastor Doug Batchelor,
president of Amazing Facts
Ministry.
He and Pastor Dwight
Nelson, of Andrews Univer-
sity, will provide a seminar on
the new Channel I, formerly
PACS, on “Final Events” on
Monday, Sept. 11.
Madrone Adventist
School classes have started,
and the entire school is deco-
rated with a nautical theme this
year. Last year it was the Ore-
gon Trail theme with a covered
wagon to climb into for Read-
ing Buddies time. But this year,
you can climb into a large boat.
The school again partici-
pated in the Labor Day Parade
on a float that students de-
signed and decorated. Every-
one looks forward to this Illi-
nois Valley Lions Club event
each year.
When the members came
to church last Sabbath, they
were amazed at the trans-
formed library. The Good Sa-
maritan is Don Hurst, who
painted the walls and put up
carefully constructed shelving
to hold the many new and older
books given the library.
A memorial service was
held on Sabbath, Sept. 2 at the
church for Melvin Richard
Davis. Pastor Verne Hyland
conducted the service. Special
music was given by several
members.
Monday, Aug. 28, every-
one joined the pastor in praising
God for a good report blessing
at the business meeting, which
revealed that all bills were paid
and budgets met.
