(Photo by ‘Illinois Valley News’) By ROGER BRANDT For IVN The maple trees that decorate Kerby with bright colors every fall have their own history story to tell. This story began during Oregon’s gold rush years and started with a single tree planted at the Pioneer Hotel, one of the first buildings to be constructed in the town of Kerbyville after it was established in 1857. In 1861, Agnes Sawyer, the wife of the hotel owner, William Sawyer, planted a maple seedling near the southwest corner of the building. This may have been done for the practical purpose of growing a tree to shade the building on hot summer afternoons. The tree was a native big-leaf maple, a common tree found in many other places around the valley. It is believed that other people in the town liked the maple, and that many of the seedlings from it were trans- planted to other places around Kerbyville. It was for this reason that some people believe the maple trees in Kerbyville came from the Agnes Sawyer tree. There may be validity to this claim. Photos taken of Kerbyville in the 1850s show that the predominant trees were oaks. The condi- tions were apparently not suitable for maple trees to grow naturally, so it is likely that they had to be trans- planted and cultivated in order for them to survive. The Agness Sawyer Tree was unique because it had four trunks instead of one. This was probably the result of an injury to the "Thanks!" to all who helped support the third annual Siskiyou Bluegrass Festival Wild River Brewing & Pizza Co. Illinois Valley resident Sally Clements, herself a survivor, will be participat- ing one such event, to be held in Seattle Aug. 25 through 27. Walkers are expected to raise $2,200 apiece. However Clements, has made $20,000 her team’s fund-raising goal. To that end, Clements has been soliciting pledges and donations from the community. She will be in front of BeBe’s Art For Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce says, main trunk of the tree when it was young and caused it to sprout from the base. As these sprouts grew, they became trunks that ra- diated out and away from each other to create four trees all connected at the base. The tree has since lost two of its trunks. One was cut down many years ago, and the other blew over dur- ing a storm. The remaining two trunks of the Agness Sawyer tree can be seen at It’s a Burl in Kerby. It is the tree on the southwest corner of the property with a tree- house cradled between the two trunks. There are other maple trees on the property, proba- bly seedlings of the original tree and planted by the Saw- yers around the old Pioneer Hotel. Everyone during the Sec- ond Friday Art Walk, Aug. 11. Clements, who has taught at Evergreen Ele- mentary School for nine years, survived a bout with breast cancer two years ago. One of her three team mates, an in-law, is also a breast-cancer survivor. “Of the four people on my team, two of us have had (cancer),” she said, “which demonstrates just how prevalent this is.” The primary benefici- ary of the dozen “Breast Cancer 3-Day” walk is the Susan G. Koman Founda- tion, which supports breast cancer research and com- munity outreach programs. And thanks to anyone we might have overlooked! Linda Sallman 128 S. Redwood Hwy.
