41st Brigade
sent to East
In a military ceremony
at Camp Shelby, Miss., Ore-
gon Gov. Kulongoski de-
ployed the Oregon National
Guard’s 41st Brigade Com-
bat Team to Afghanistan
last week, marking the larg-
est overseas deployment of
the Oregon Guard since
World War II.
“I can tell you that send-
ing nearly 1,000 of our best-
trained, best-motivated,
best-equipped soldiers on a
long overseas deployment
will be no small loss for
Oregon,” Gov. said, ad-
dressing hundreds of sol-
diers, sailors and airmen
from 31 other states, in addi-
tion to the Oregon Guard
personnel.
“From fighting forest
fires to helping with search
and rescue, the 41st and the
entire Oregon National
Guard is indispensable to
Oregon,” he said.
As part of Operation
Enduring Freedom, the 41st
Brigade Combat Team will
help train Afghanistan’s
military during the year-
long deployment. The same
unit deployed to Louisiana
for nearly two months in the
aftermath of Hurricane
“Katrina,” where it assisted
with relief efforts.
“As the 41st undertakes
this long and difficult de-
ployment, I can tell you that
we will not only miss their
talent and dedication, we
will miss their fighting
spirit-the same spirit with

Mucho marijuana seized
by OSP close to Gold Hill
Marijuana valued at
$150,000 was seized by
Oregon State Police near
Medford in a significant
incident on Interstate 5.
OSP troopers, assisted
by a narcotics detection ca-
nine, seized approximately
200 pounds of marijuana
concealed in a pickup truck
during a Sunday afternoon
traffic stop on I-5 in the
Medford area.
The driver was not
charged as of Tuesday, June
6, and the investigation is
continuing.
OSP said that on June 4
at approximately 2:40 p.m.,
OSP Trooper Brandon
Boice stopped a 2006
pickup for a traffic violation
northbound on I-5 near
milepost 37.
During the contact with
the driver, a 31-year old
white male from Vancouver,
Wash., Senior Trooper Bill
Matson and Detective Dave
Beck, with his drug dog
“Beepers” joined Boice.
As Beck walked
“Beepers” around the
pickup, “Beepers” alerted to
the pickup’s exterior area.
Examination by troopers led
to the discovery of nine
packages containing ap-
proximately 200 pounds of
marijuana.
The driver was detained
for further investigation and
released. The vehicle and
marijuana were seized. Esti-
mated value of the seized
marijuana is approximately
$150,000.
OSP Drug Enforcement
Section detectives are con-
tinuing the investigation so
additional details may not be
released to prevent compro-
mising the case.
This case is believed to
be one of the largest mari-
juana seizures during a traf-
fic stop by OSP. The largest
case occurred April 4, 2005
when a trooper stopped a
pickup on I-5 southbound in
the Salem area and seized
approximately 323 pounds
of marijuana. Two men
were arrested in that case.
Drug seizures have
steadily increased during the
last two years during traffic
stops by OSP troopers. Sig-
nificant cash and drug sei-
zures have occurred on in-
terstate and secondary state
highways, including several
involving drug dogs part-
nered with OSP patrol
troopers.
Approximately 18
months ago, OSP Patrol
Services Division added
four dogs to assist with nar-
cotics detection. “Beepers”
is a fifth dog assigned to the
Drug Enforcement Section.
