Planets in Strange Places
are so much smaller than the Sun that they
never heated up enough to be real stars. But
even brown dwarfs might have planets.
Spitzer looked at a brown dwarf named
Cha 110913-773444.
The telescope saw
clouds around the
dwarf. Inside those
clouds dust and sand
may be sticking to-
gether,
building
more planets.
If you lived on a
planet orbiting a brown dwarf, you’d have a
hard time waking up for school. Failed stars
are so dim, they don’t make bright sunbeams.
And the birds wouldn’t sing either—too cold
for that!
Planets are being born in some seriously
strange places.

Astronomers used to think planets like
Earth usually orbited regular stars like the Sun.
But a new discovery is making them think
again.
NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope (a
cousin of Hubble) has spotted planets being
born around two blue stars named R66 and
R126. These stars are whoppers! They are 30
and 70 times more massive than our own Sun.
Astronomers call them “hypergiants.”
When Spitzer looked at the hypergiants, it
saw some clouds around the stars. The clouds
are made of gas, dust and sand. The dust and
sand are sticking together, building up planets.
That’s what astronomers mean by “planets be-
ing born.” One day the hypergiants might have
planets like Earth.
You think that sounds strange? Spitzer has
spotted something even stranger. The tele-
scope found planets being born around a
“brown dwarf.”
Brown dwarfs are stars that failed. They
