Valentine Executive Director Lovejoy Hospice In an effort to help you to be better informed about hospice care in our community, Lovejoy Hospice produces an informative question and answer column each month. Look for our column printed on the fourth Wednesday edition of the ‘Illinois Valley News.’ Question: My relative is dying? Will music help or bother him? Answer: Music and sound are established methods used to help with physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs at the end of life. Music can be used to manage stress and pain, enhance memo- ries, and improve cognition. Gentle sounds divert attention from thoughts of stress and pain. At certain tempos music can slow a too-rapid breathing and heart rate and reduce unwanted symp- toms. The choice of music should be geared toward what the patient finds comforting. For some pa- tients, the music they choose to hear at stressful or painful times is not what one might expect. A patient who always chose to listen to rousing renditions of polkas might choose to hear classical music. Some want to hear special songs that evoke good memories, while others may want to avoid those songs because the memo- ries are more than they can bear. If a patient is not able to choose, select pleasant, easy-listening music for the bedside played at an appropriate sound level. Consider recording stories or messages to have played for the patient. The patient may even be able to record stories or messages to their family that can become a wonderful legacy and memory.
