Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, April 26, 2006 Page 15 Lack of sleep accounts for some traffic fatalities Crashes in which the driver was fatigued, drowsy or fell asleep result in the deaths of approximately a dozen people a year in the state, said Oregon Dept. of Transportation. Such crashes also injure more than 400 people in Ore- gon each year. Sleep depriva- tion leads to approximately 100,000 police-reported crashes each year across the nation, according to the Na- tional Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “We believe the number may be under-reported,” said Sgt. Michael Stupfel, Oregon State Police Colli- sion Reconstruction Pro- gram manager. “In some single-vehicle fatal crashes, or multi- vehicle crashes in which the offending driver died, the driver may had been fa- tigued, but we may never know because people who would can’t tell investiga- tors what caused the crash. “We believe fatigue is a possible factor in such crashes where other impair- ments -- such as alcohol, drugs or driver distraction - were ruled out through toxi- cology tests or passenger statements.” Experts recommend nine hours or more of sleep for teen-agers, but only 20 percent say they achieve this amount, according to a poll by the National Sleep Foun- dation (NSF). Nearly half, 45 percent, report that they get less than eight hours of sleep on school nights. “Our newly released Sleep in America poll indi- cates that adolescents aren’t getting the sleep they need at a crucial time for develop- ment and growth in many respects,” said Richard L. Gelula, NSF’s chief execu- tive officer. “Sleepiness is associ- ated with reduced short-term memory and learning abil- ity, negative moods, incon- sistent performance, slower Two from CJ Attain OIT Honor Two students at Oregon Institute of Technology at Klamath Falls attained the 2006 Winter Term Deans’ List. That’s why we’re asking parents, educators and teens themselves to take an active role in making sleep a priority.” Ways to avoid drowsy driving: *Start any trip by get- ting enough sleep the night before. Plan to drive during the times of day when you are normally awake, and stay overnight rather than traveling straight through. *Avoid driving during your body’s down-time. Take a mid-afternoon break and find a place to sleep be- tween midnight and 6 a.m. *Talk with your passen- ger if you have one. A pas- senger can also let you know when you are show- ing signs of sleepiness. If your passenger thinks you are getting sleepy, let some- one else drive or pull over and sleep. A nap could save your life and those of others. *Make sure both people in the front of the car are awake. A driver who needs rest should go to the back seat, buckle up and sleep. *Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles. Stop sooner if you show any danger signs of sleepiness. During your break, take a nap, stretch, take a walk and get some exercise before getting back into the vehicle. Here are a few signals to tell if you’re about to fall asleep. Even if you are not aware of being drowsy, if you have a sleep debt, you are at risk. If you experience any of these danger signs, take them as a warning that you could fall asleep with- out meaning to. *Your eyes close or go our of focus by themselves. *You have trouble keeping your head up. *You can’t stop yawning. *You have wandering, disconnected thoughts. *You don’t remember driving the last few miles. *You drift between lanes, tailgate or miss traffic signs. *You keep jerking the car back onto the lane. *You drifted off the road and narrowly missed crashing. *If you have even one of these symptoms, you may be in danger of falling asleep. Get off the road and take a nap. 30 years experience in water, sewer & pipeline construction, brush clearing, septic installation & utility line trenching Specializing in alternative septic systems READY TO DIG & AIMING TO PLEASE 24 HOURS A DAY 1-(541) 597-4486 CCB#159580 Rachel Goodman, L.M.T.
