The second-place class, raising $198.95, was Pat Brandt’s third- through fifth-grade class. Overall, the drive brought in $2,022.70 and will be shared with Evergreen PTA. The two win- ning classes (bottom photo) were treated to an ice cream party. The principal had promised that if the goal of $2,000 was reached, the top money-raising class could tell her what colors to dye her hair. The driver was identified as Altha M. Pool, 57, of Morgan Lane. She was taken by American Medical Response to Illi- nois Valley Airport, and transferred to a Mercy Flights helicopter, said OSP. Her cur- rent location and condition were unavailable. Pool’s two passengers, both from Cali- fornia, were not reported injured. OSP said that evidence showed that Pool drifted off the highway and traveled for approximately 123 feet prior to striking two trees. They allowed the car through up to the rear axle, and the car then nose-dived, OSP indicated. (Photo by Dale & Elaine Sandberg/I.V. Fire District Media Dept.) Smoke alarms save lives if in working order Do you have smoke detectors in your home? When is the last time you checked the batteries? Did you take one out because it was beeping? That is telling you that you need a new battery, said Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD). How much are the lives of you and your loved ones worth? Smoke detectors do save lives because when working properly they can provide an early warning that smoke is in the house, noted IVFD. Do you have fire drills with the family and pets? Do you know how they will respond to the sound? Do you know where they will go? People and pets die in fires because they don’t know the house is on fire. Not all children hear smoke detectors -- do yours? Do you have a fire ex- tinguisher in your home? Keep a small fire small. The life you save may be your own. If you need help with the proper placement of smoke detectors and extin- guishers, or have any ques- tion about being fire safe phone IVFD at 592-2225. - Mahatma Gandhi - 204 N. Redwood Hwy.
