Publish 4/12 Crowd appreciates ‘Voices of Women’ A special theatrical event hosted by The Community Media and Education Center in Downtown Cave Junction was presented to a large, enthusiastic audience Friday evening, March 31. “Voices of Women Across Time, Cir- cumstances and the Generations” is an en- semble piece created by Cave Junction au- thor and columnist Olivia Taylor-Young. Honoring Women’s History Month, the pres- entation offered music and memories docu- menting the links between women’s history and the continuing struggle for human rights. The words of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Louis Nizer, Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem were among the voices from the past woven into the readers’ theater presentation. In honor of the occasion, musicians “Bob and Kel,” of Grants Pass, opened with the song, “A Man Needs A Maid.” In a repeat performance of a March 12 presentation in Grants Pass, women leaders from the community and throughout the county offered a variety of readings tracing the women’s movement in the United States from the first Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, N.Y. in 1948, through the 70- year struggle for suffrage and up to the pre- sent day. Presenters included: Margaret Keip, Dar- lene Leach, Constance Palaia-Marr and Ar- den McConnell, of Grants Pass; and Judy Hoyle and Taylor-Young of Cave Junction. Hoyle heroically stepped up to the plate at the last minute and did what was called a fantastic job, standing in for Dixie Wilkes- Owens, of Grants Pass, who was ill. “This was a labor of love,” said Taylor- Young. “I really didn’t need inspiration to put it together. Just the opportunity to write and present the material. And taking our show on the road was especially gratifying, especially since there have already been requests to re- peat the presentation next year.” Sports Challenge 1.
