Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, March 22, 2006 Page 6 Ray E. Spurgin No services are planned for Selma resident Ray Evert Spurgin, 75, who died at home Sunday, March 12, 2006. Mr. Spurgin was born on Aug. 4, 1930 in Attica, Ark. On Sept. 12, 1950 in Reno, Nev., he married the former Wilma Lorene Hale. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He also had been em- ployed by the National Park Service, and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Additionally, Mr. Spurgin worked as a mechanic and store clerk until his retire- ment. He moved to Selma in 1970 from Ripon, Calif. He was a member of the California Houndsmen Asso- ciation, and he enjoyed hunt- ing, fishing and inventing. Mr. Spurgin was known as “a tinker extraordinaire,” and a collector, as well as being a fan of Bluegrass music. Besides his wife, Wilma Spurgin, of Selma, he is sur- vived by a son, Darrel Ray Spurgin, of Selma; three daughters, Wilma Darlene Anderson, Marilyn Delaine Sherman, and Linda Arlene Silva, all of Selma; four sisters, Christine Wells, of Stockton, St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church Our Gospel reading on the Fourth Sunday of Lent comes from John: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so shall the Son of Man be lifted up.” We will read further, “For God did not send his Son into the world to con- demn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be con- demned….” National Day of Prayer In Illinois Valley There will be a commu- nity gathering for the Na- tional Day of Prayer with services at noon and 5 p.m. Thursday, May 4 at Valley Evangelical Free Church 498 Laurel Road, Cave Junction. Noted a spokesman: Prayer has always been used in this country for guid- ance, protection and strength -- even before we were a na- tion or a handful of colonies. The Pilgrims at Plymouth relied on prayer during their first and darkest winter. Our founding fathers also called for prayer during the Continental Congress. In their eyes, our recently created nation and freedoms were a direct gift from God. And being such, there was only KBCC - LP 107.9 FM Illinois Valley’s only Christian radio station Senior Nutrition Menu Sponsored by Meals are served in the CJ County Bldg. 592-2126, 474-5440 FRIDAY, MARCH 24 THREE CHEESE LASAGNA Steamed Spinach Garden Vegetable Salad French Bread Mixed Fruit Cup MONDAY, MARCH 27 TUNA SALAD SANDWICH Potato Salad Coleslaw Whole Wheat Bread Oatmeal Cookie WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29 CHICKEN SUPREME Seasoned Spinach Pineapple Tidbits Whole Wheat Bread Birthday Cake Calif., Aretta Stewart, of Grants Pass, Mary Madewell, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Pat Casey, of Antlers, Oka.; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great- grandchildren. Gettling Michael Wayne Davis, 56, of Cave Junction, died March 9, 2006 at his residence. A private service was ar- ranged through Illinois Valley Funeral Home, with burial at Granite Hill Cemetery in Grants Pass. There were no known relatives. Longtime Josephine County resident Thomas D. Gettling, 84, of Grants Pass, died peacefully at home Wednesday, March 1, 2006 with his son and family at his side. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25 at 11 a.m. at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors Chapel with Pastor Russ Millsaps officiating. A reception for friends and family to celebrate his life will follow in the Flower Bldg. at the Jose- phine County Fairgrounds. In lieu of flowers, the fam- ily suggests memorial dona- tions to Asante Hospice, 282 E. Barnett Road, Medford OR 97504. Mr. Gettling was born March 15, 1921 in Eagle, Idaho. He grew up in the Rogue Valley, graduating from Ashland High School in 1939. He married Louise Whitney on Feb. 14, 1942, and they had two sons. Mr. Gettling was a gun- nery instructor for the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He attained the rank of staff sergeant. After military service he started Al- pine Meat Co. with a co- one way to ensure protection -- through prayer. Today the need for prayer is as great as ever. Many would say even more. Our nation faces battlefields, plus an epidemic of broken homes, violence, sexual im- morality and social strife. As the heroes of our na- tion did in the past, we must again bow our heads in prayer. We must ask the Lord to bless our leaders with wis- dom and protection, and that we will have the fortitude to overcome the challenges at hand. If the Pilgrims, our founding fathers and leaders throughout our history never underestimated the power of prayer, neither should we. It is our goal that you, your family and all your friends that you can bring would participate in our com- munity’s observance of the National Day of Prayer. We pray that this event so affects lives that praying for our na- tion moves from a one-day event to a lifetime endeavor. Illinois Valley residents and millions of other citizens at more than 40,000 events across America on the first Thursday in May will pray with conviction that God would continue to shed His grace on us. “Those who honor me I will honor” (1 Samuel 2:30). Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Sometimes it may be difficult for us to see Jesus with human characteristics. But in overturning the tables of the money-changers in the temple, He didn’t lose his divinity. He was being him- self, not tolerating his father’s house being used for profit. All activities in the church must have as their intended purpose the glorifi- cation and worship of God.
