Page 6 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, March 1, 2006 IVHS swim team kicked, stroked to stellar first season Although the Illinois Valley High School team did not make it to state com- petition this year, three of its four swimmers came away from the State District 4 Meet with ribbons, placing in the top 12 out of 146 total competitors. They came away as better swimmers, with more knowledge of the sport, and enthusiasm to do it again next year, said coach Cyn- thia Hobbins. Three out of the four swimmers are hoping to continue staying in shape by joining the Stingrays Swim Club in Grants Pass. “This will give them a much-better opportunity to make it to state next sea- son,” said Hobbins. “As first-year competitors, these fine athletes made me very proud. We would like to see the swim team grow. “I would also like to once again have a summer swim club at our Cave Junc- tion Pool, if we can get it open,” she added. “I am working on get- ting my USA Coaching cre- dential and seeing if we may be ‘umbrellaed’ under the Grants Pass YMCA’s Sting- rays,” she said. “Swimming is a lifetime sport, and these athletes deserve recognition for their efforts.” IVHS First-year swim team results: *Emily Harris, 50-yard freestyle, 9th place, 30.22 and 30.06. *Nick Greener, 50-yard freestyle, 7th place, 27.40 and 27.38. *Ian Barker-Cortrect, 50-yard freestyle, 10th place, 28.33 and 27.83. *Emily Harris, 100-yard freestyle 12th place, 1:07.70 and 1:07.74. *Victoria Prince, 100- yard freestyle, 22nd place Person Best, 1:19.74. *Nick Greener, 100- yard freestyle, 7th place, 1:02.79 and 1:01.24. *Ian Barker-Cortrect, 100-yard freestyle, 8th place, 1:03.69 and 1:02.88. *Victoria Prince, 100- yard breast, 13th (place per- sonal best), 1:45.47. 139 S. Sat., March 4th DOOR PRIZES St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church The Lenten Season offi- cially begins today, Ash Wednesday, and will con- tinue until we celebrate the Easter Triduum starting on Holy Thursday evening. The First Sunday of Lent will include a reading from Genesis where God told Noah after the flood, “I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be an- other flood to devastate the earth.” We will also read from Mark’s Gospel about Jesus being in the desert for 40 days and being tempted by Satan. Seventh-day Adventist Students from Milo Ad- ventist Academy gave three sermonettes Saturday on the different types of love, espe- cially the Agape love that God manifests toward us, which is completely without reservation and uncondi- tional. One student gave a vio- lin solo. Another student read an interesting chil- dren’s story for all the chil- dren in the congregation. The students challenged the congregation to demonstrate God’s Agape Love to every- one in the community. A special vegetarian luncheon was served to the students and their sponsors. Big Jim Sutton, rancher and businessman from Day- ton, Tenn., will speak to the congregation Saturday. His sermon title is: “Rich … in His Presence.” He will testify how God saved him from the San Francisco cocktail circuit and brought him joy in serving Christ, as his personal savior. Sutton has became a lay leader as lay evangelist. He has spoken to many church congregations in America and abroad. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Sunday’s lesson con- cerned the Transfiguration of Jesus where Moses and Elijah appeared. The disci- ples were able to see the true nature of God’s son. It was but a visit, as the paths for Jesus and the disci- ples lay in the valleys be- low, with crucifixion and persecution. We can learn that mountaintop experiences are occasional, and our faith and trust need to guide us in our daily lives.
