The meeting marked the first use of the newly con- structed IVFD Administra- tive Headquarters adjacent to Station 1 in Cave Junc- tion on Caves Hwy. Other candidates were Jim Dough- erty and Darrel Allen. Board President Larrick Jones said that Michel would be sworn into office during the board’s next meeting on Thursday, March 9. Jones also noted that the board and five citizens would serve as the IVFD Budget Committee, and that a meeting schedule for the 2006-07 fiscal year delibera- tions will be announced. The board voted 4-0 to adopt revised job descrip- tions for members of the board of directors and the position of IVFD chief. Cougar girls hoopsters swat Hornets The Illinois Valley girls varsity basketball team claimed a share of the Skyline Conference crown Friday night, Feb. 17 in Ken Mann Memorial Gym, beating the Henley Hor- nets 52-47. The girls victory se- cured at least a share of the Skyline title for the second straight season and avenged the Cougars only conference defeat to the Hornets in Klamath Falls earlier in the year. Sheena Cole provided an all-star worthy perform- ance, scoring 21 points and pulling down 7 boards. The 12th-ranked Hor- nets came out with de- fenses tailored towards stopping the Cougars tal- ented point guard Emily Dudley, yet she was still able to contribute 17 points and came up with two tre- mendous steals in the wan- ing seconds of the game to seal the victory. Trailing 27-26 going into halftime, the seventh- ranked Cougars used a strong third period to gain enough of a cushion to hold off the Hornets with clutch free throws in the end. Before Dudley’s hero- ics, the Hornets Sierra Patzke hit two straight 3- point shots to tie the game at 47 apiece with a little more than a minute left in the game. The Cougars then went inside to Cole, who was fouled and sent to the line where she converted two free throws. Up 49-47 with 12 sec- onds left, Dudley came up with her first defensive gem, picking off the in- bounds pass. Henley fouled her im- mediately, and Dudley was able to make the second of her free throws for a three point margin. On their next inbounds attempt, the wily Dudley used her speed to again intercept the inbounds pass. Henley fouled her and Dudley iced the game from the line with two more free throws with six seconds left. The Cougars can clinch the outright Skyline crown with a victory over Hidden Valley when they meet Tuesday night, Feb. 21 on the Mustangs’ home court. The girls can ill-afford to overlook the ‘Stangs, who defeated Henley last week, a victory which helped the lady Cougars title hopes. With a victory over Hidden Valley, the girls would earn a first-round bye in the Class 3A state playoffs and would allow them a home game in Ken Mann Memorial Gym, where the Cougars have been tough to beat. If the Cougars lose and end up in a tie with Henley, then they would have to face the Hornets again in a conference title playoff game to determine the Skyline’s No. 1 and No. 2 seeds for the state tournament.
