Page 13 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, February 15, 2006 Oregon Dept. of Transportation stresses safety belt use, car seats for saving children (Continued from page 12) death and injury among children. Illinois River Acupuncture 592-5041 Mon., Wed., Fri. Jo Anne Stone, M.S., L.Ac. restraints. This means that they were either using no restraints at all or were using improperly fitting adult lap and shoulder belts. “According to the latest U.S. Dept. of Transportation recommendations, child passengers aren’t safe in adult seat belts until they are at least 4-9,” said Carla Levinski, occupant protec- tion coordinator for ODOT’s Transportation Safety Division. “Children weighing over 40 pounds need a booster seat until they are big enough to fit the adult belt systems.” While any restraint is better than none, only 34 percent of Oregon children 4 to 6 or weighing 40 to 60 pounds are using booster seats, according to a 2005 ODOT observational study. Use of a booster seat reduces the risk of crash injury 59 percent compared to safety belts alone, accord- ing to the most recent re- search by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Motor vehicle crashes claimed 476 lives in Oregon during 2005. Nearly half of those who died while not wearing safety restraints could have been saved had they been, ODOT said. “In addition, we recom- mend that children 12 and younger ride in the back seat because national crash data indicate a 37 percent de- creased risk of injury for rear-seated children in this age group,” Levenski said.
