Taxi cab robber nabbed

Max Hoffman, a senior at
Illinois Valley High School, is
January Josephine County
Board of Commissioners’
Student of the Month.
Hoffman is the son of
Marc Hoffman and Susan
Freedman. He has main-
tained a 4.0 grade-point av-
erage.
He is a member of
Mathletes, IVHS Chapter of
National Honor Society,
Who’s Who Among High
School Students, and Na-
tional Honor Roll. He is on
the soccer and mountain
bike teams. In soccer, he has
received Skyline Confer-
ence Honorable Mention.
Hoffman has been
awarded Summa Cum Laude
status on the IVHS Honor
Roll. Additionally, he has
earned the Principal’s Stu-
dent of the Month Certificate,
and the Perfect Attendance
Citation. He has been named
head mechanic in his power
mechanic classes.
After graduation, he
plans to study to become an
engineer, but is still consid-
ering what aspect.
Following the arrest of a
burglary suspect, the same
17-year-old boy was identi-
fied as the suspect in the
armed robbery of a cab
driver, said Josephine County
Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).
The suspect, identified
as Stephen O. King Jr., of
Sunny Valley was arrested
Wednesday, Jan. 11. JCSO
said that he was charged
with first-degree robbery,
first-degree burglary, theft,
and unauthorized use of a
motor vehicle.
JCSO reported that
when the victim in the taxi
holdup identified the sus-
pect, the suspect said that he
recognized him as the man
he had robbed.
When his Sunny Valley
Motel room was checked,
said JCSO, officers found an
assault-style 12-gage shot-
gun between the mattresses
of his bed. They also found
methamphetamine lab com-
ponents and chemicals.
JCSO gave the follow-
ing account:
Deputy John Auburn
was investigating a burglary
in the Tunnel Loop Road
area of north rural Josephine
County in which coins and
jewelry were reported miss-
ing. A relative of the victims
alerted area coin and jewelry
dealers.
Within minutes of the
notifications, a Grants Pass
business phoned and said
that a man and woman
were trying to sell coins
and jewelry. The pair were
detained, and when ques-
tioned by Auburn, it was
determined that King was
the burglar.
The woman with him
was identified as his
mother, Cheryl King.
Auburn, who had han-
dled the taxi holdup where
a suspect used a large
hunting knife and took the
cab and the driver’s
money, felt that King fit
the description. The victim
was called in and made the
ID. King acknowledged
the cabbie as the victim.
