Almost 120,000 cards I.V. swimmers making waves AN AUSTRALIAN ODYSSEY, called a once-in-a-lifetime experience, was enjoyed by Wescott Lynch (above with Sydney Opera House in background) and Sam Green (bottom right with kangaroo crossing sign). With lots of help from Illinois Valley or- ganizations and individuals, they raised approximately $7,600 to attend an invita- tional wrestling tournament near Brisbane, sponsored by International Sports Spe- cialists Inc. in July. They said they are extremely appreciative of all the help. Green and Lynch, now 19 and 20, earned cham- pionship wrestling awards at Illinois Valley High School from which they graduated in June 2005. Green won the Skyline Conference dis- trict title in his sopho- more and senior years and took second place as a junior. Lynch was third-place district champ as a sophomore, and was in second place his junior and senior years. In Australia, Green was awarded a third- place bronze medal. Lynch was on his way to an award, but suffered a head injury and was un- able to continue. Both said that learning about a different culture and meeting people from around the world was an eye-opening experience. While more than 10,000 operators in this age group have already got- ten their education cards, an estimated 22,000 have not. The cost of the card is a one-time $10 fee. During summer 2005, 478 boaters were cited for not carrying a card, incurring a $94 fine. The boater education card shows that the holder has completed a basic boater education course. The law was enacted by the 1999 Oregon Legislature to re- duce accidents, injuries and property damage on Ore- gon's increasingly crowded waterways. OSMB is phasing the requirement in by age. When fully implemented, it will apply to all boaters op- erating boats greater than 10 hp. The age requirement will increase to boaters 60 and younger in 2007, 70 and younger in 2008 and all boaters in 2009.
