Historians warn that people who digitally
store precious documents risk not being able
to access those documents 10 or 20 years
down the road, after the file formats used to
create those documents become obsolete.
They warn that public and scientific
documents could be lost for the same reason.
To help, a file format called the (PDF/A) has
been established. It is based on the PDF 1.4
specification established by Adobe Systems
and helps ensure that files will be accessible
in the future.
Digital imaging is more affordable than
ever, and new advances in hardware have
made printing high-quality photos fast, easy
and straightforward -- even without the use
of a PC.
Photo printers, such as the portable HP
Photosmart 475 Photo Printer, offer high-
quality photos for photo enthusiasts on the
go. It delivers the power of a PC with a built-
in handle, a 2.5-inch color display, and prints
5x7-inch, 4x6-inch and 4x12-inch photos that
resist fading for generations.
It is also the only printer of its kind that
stores photos -- more than 1000 -- with 1.5
GB of internal memory.

The Savvy Senior
U.S. seniors are in danger of losing the
right to choose where they have their cars
repaired, according to a new paper released
by the Senior Center for Health and Secu-
rity.
The new paper, “America’s Seniors
and the Right to Repair Their Cars - Will
They be Safe or Stranded,” highlights an
ever-growing car dealer/auto maker mo-
nopoly designed to deny seniors and all
driving Americans access to affordable,
independent repair shops.
The paper highlights:
*Federal government regulations re-
quire that all cars built after 1995 are
equipped with a computer system that
alerts the car owner to a mechanical prob-
lem. Currently, only the auto manufactur-
ers and their dealers have access to all of
the information stored in the vehicle’s
computer about mechanical problems and
the parts and repairs needed to fix them.
*There are currently more than 230
million vehicles on America's roadways.
The average age of our light vehicles is
almost 10, outliving most manufacturer
warranties. Of those 230 million vehicles,
tens of millions are owned by America’s
seniors.
*Almost 70 percent of all repair work
is currently performed by service facilities
other than car dealers. They provide
Americans with savings of 20 to 40 per-
cent on average. As our cars age, access to
important vehicle computer information
will become critical to independent repair
shops and the savings they provide.
*America’s seniors will be least able
to afford the “car dealer monopoly tax”
imposed by denying independent repair
facilities access to on-board computer in-
formation. The ability to safely operate a
motor vehicle gives older Americans more
choices, a wider range of possible activi-
ties, flexibility, and independence.
* Polling data show an overwhelming
majority of Americans believe that the in-
formation stored in a vehicle’s computer
should be available to the owner and the
owner’s chosen mechanic.

You Don't Say!
*The seven-day week became part of
the Roman calendar in 321 A.D.
*It was not until the year 440 that
Christmas was celebrated on Dec. 25.
*According to the Mayan “long count”
linear calendar, the end of the world would
occur on June 5, 2012.
*By the year 46 B.C., the Roman cal-
endar had fallen 90 days behind the sea-
sons. Julius Caesar decreed that 46 B.C.
would be 445 days long to make up the
excess, and that each year thereafter that
was divisible by four would be a leap year,
with 366 days instead of the regular 365.
This is the origin of the Julian calendar.
*The Gregorian calendar is the one in
use today. Pope Gregory XIII corrected the
time error in the Julian calendar by omit-
ting 10 days (October 5-14, 1582) and by
ordaining that thereafter, the years ending
in hundreds should not be leap years unless
divisible by 400.
*In English, the days of the week are
named after the Saxon gods. Sunday is
named after the sun, Monday after the
moon, Tuesday after Tiw, Wednesday after
Woden, Thursday after Thor, Friday after
Freya, and Saturday after Saturn.
*Historians disagree about the origin
of wrestling.
*Olympic wrestling winners have been
recorded since 708 B.C.
*USA Wrestling conducts national
championships each year in folkstyle, free-
style, Greco-Roman and women's wres-
tling.
*Chicago is closer to Moscow than it
is to Rio de Janeiro.
*The time spent deleting SPAM costs
U.S. businesses $21.6 billion annually.
*The biggest dog on record was an Old
English Mastiff that weighed 343 pounds.
He was 8 feet, 3 inches from nose to tail.
*Americans take an average of just 10
days per year vacation. In France, the law
guarantees everyone five weeks of vaca-
tion, and most full-time workers get two
full months vacation
*At the University of Kentucky, the
average cheerleader is 5-0 to 5-1 and
weighs 97 pounds.
*Texas is the cheerleading capital of
America.
*It was not until the 1920s that women
became involved in cheerleading. Around
this time, the University of Minnesota be-
gan to use tumbling and stunts during its
cheers.
*In July 2004, the University of Mary-
land became the first Division I-A school
to recognize competitive cheerleading as a
varsity sport and count it toward its Title
IX requirements.
*Until July, 1929, U.S. currency was
7.42 inches by 3.13 inches.
