A Memorial Mass will
be celebrated Wednesday,
Jan. 4 in Wallace, Mich. for
Celeste Marie Kline, 60,
former Cave Junction Li-
brary chief, who died Dec.
19, 2005 in Yakima, Wash.
after a long battle with
breast cancer.
Interment will follow at
Mellen Township Cemetery.
Mrs. Kline, a former
Grants Pass resident, served
the Josephine County Li-
brary System from 1975 to
1992. Her service included
being system director from
1990 to 1992.
She was born July 25,
1945 in Daggett, Mich. She
graduated magna cum laude
with a master’s degree in
English literature from Seat-
tle University, and earned a
master’s degree in library
science from University of
Michigan at Ann Arbor.
While librarian in Cave
Junction, she and fellow
AAUW members began the
Frog O’Faire, held in Grants
Pass. An emblematic frog,
quickly drawn by her assist-
nat, Jeanne (Stewart)
Kengla, still is used.
Mrs. Kline is survived
by numerous relatives.
Suit settled
Michael Burke, a former
Josephine County Sheriff’s
Office deputy, will receive
$240,000 from his lawsuit
against the county.
He was dismissed in
2003, then rehired subsequent
to accusations, about using
excessive force during an
arrest, as unfounded.
The county’s insurance
carrier likely will pay all but
$50,000 of the amount. Court
costs of $20,000 will be paid
from the $50,000.
Two other lawsuits last
year, brought by former depu-
ties Wayne Dykes and Carroll
Huffman, resulted in each
being paid $115,000. Both
claimed unjust termination.

Question: Holidays are difficult for
me since the death of my family mem-
ber. How do I make it through the
holidays?
Answer:
Dr. Alan Wolfelt, a noted
grief educator, states that you must
honor your pain (as strange as that may
seem). People who have experienced
the death of a loved one experience
grief in ways unique to each individual.
Yet it is a common human experience
to have a rise in memories that are
happy and poignant and sad during
times such as holidays, birthdays, or
special family events. Sadness and
tears give value and respect to the loss
of the presence of someone you cared
very much for. It shows your capacity
for love, and you have permission to
love in this way.
Balance your sadness with sharing
your love with other people in your life.
Join into some events you may be
invited to or create an event of your
own and invite a few special people to
visit. Spend some valuable time remi-
niscing about times past, and some
time laughing about times present.
Another idea is to offer your time as a
volunteer for an organization or event
serving others in great need during the
holidays. Giving in any way is healing,
even if it is sharing a hearing ear or
gentle touch with a neighbor or friend.
If you feel that sadness is possibly
harmful to you, please call your physi-
cian or therapist.
Have a gentle and loving holiday. You
are loved.
