Valentine appointed new leader at Lovejoy Hospice
Appointment of Cheryl
Valentine -- who has 30
years of nursing experience
including being a hospice
nurse case manager -- as
executive director of
Lovejoy Hospice was an-
nounced by Joan Spohn,
president of the board of
directors.
Valentine is a registered
nurse with a bachelor of
science degree in nursing,
and is a certified hospice
palliative nurse (CHPN).
Valentine has served as
the Patient Services man-
ager and interim executive
director at Lovejoy Hospice
since June. She has worked
as a nursing educator and a
manager and as a public
health nurse.
As a CHPN she brings a
specialty practice to her
broad background in man-
agement and administration,
Spohn said. She is also a
founding member of the
regional End-of-Life Coali-
tion.
In June 2001 she re-
ceived the Golden Lamp
Award from the Oregon
Health Science University
of Nursing at Portland for
“scholarship, leadership,
professional commitment,
innovative contributions,
and humanitarian ideals.”
“I have always focused
on positive relations with
patients, staff, physicians
and our community,” said
Valentine.
“I believe deeply in a
philosophy of respect, com-
petence, and generosity of
spirit balanced with excel-
lent patient care.”
“Lovejoy is incredibly
fortunate to have an execu-
tive director of Cheryl’s
caliber, so capable of step-
ping into this role,” said
Spohn. “As we begin to
celebrate 25 years of service
within our community we
know that Cheryl will pro-
vide excellent leadership.”
Lovejoy Hospice is a
24-year-old community-
based, free-standing, not-
for-profit organization.
It provides holistic,
community based services
and programs to meet the
end-of-life-care needs of
patients and families in Jo-
sephine County plus parts of
Douglas and Jackson coun-
ties.
Each year Lovejoy pro-
vides end-of-life care to
more than 300 patients and
their families.
Vitamin C level
linked to asthma
Results of a recent Aus-
tralian study found that severe
asthma sufferers have low
levels of vitamin C in their
blood compared to people
with mild or no asthma.
According to the August
issue of ‘European Respira-
tory Journal,” “a higher vita-
min C intake could help peo-
ple with severe asthma.”
The study also uncov-
ered that people with high
levels of C had better lung
function overall.
LOVEJOY HOSPICE conducted its annual Light Up a
Life ceremony at Immanuel United Methodist Church
Tuesday night, Dec. 13 to recall and honor loved ones
who have gone on. Among those adding to the pro-
gram (immediately above, from left) were Anita Ander-
son, Joy Hoskins, and Melanie Hoskins, who sang for
those assembled. The program also included partici-
pants placing small glass angels on a remembrance
tree in memory of their loved ones; and the traditional
