The high school winter sport season has added a new sport -- Illinois Valley High School has a swim team, said Hobbins, who is serving as team coach. “This is the first season IVHS has ever offered swim team competition,” said Hob- bins. ‘The team started work- ing out Nov. 7. The swim- mers who have committed make the trek to Grants Pass to swim at the YMCA three or more days a week. “The other Skyline Con- ference swim teams have made room for our swimmers at several of their meets. “When the idea of a swim team was announced at the high school,” Hobbins continued, “there was a large turn-out of interested students. As the students found out that they would have to practice in Grants Pass, the turn-out became smaller. “We have five swim- mers, three of whom have never competed in swim- ming before. “This is a huge chal- lenge for our swimmers,” Hobbins said, “as some of our competitors are year- round swimmers. With three weeks of practice under their belts, these swimmers will meet the challenge. “The IVHS swim team members are Ian Barker- Cortrecht, Nick Greener, Emily Harris, Roxi Holmes and Victoria Prince.” Hobbins said that as with most sports at IVHS, there is an issue of funds. “The Cougar swimmers will have a couple of fund- raisers,” Hobbins said. “The monies will help pay for the meets, district champion- ships, and possibly team warm-up suits. “They will have a swim-athon this month. Those who can help, but who do not know any of our swimmers can phone me at 287-0661. “The community re- sponse to the idea of a swim team has been very posi- tive,” she said. “It is one more positive growth ex- perience for our youth. “We have a lot to learn in our first year, so we may offer IVHS Cougar swim- ming in the future,” Hobbins concluded.
