Llama-o-rama featured at Forest Edge Farm in I.V.
Those looking for
thoughtful holiday gifts that
are unique, personal and
useful are offered ideas by
Cave Junction’s Forest Edge
Farm.
The fiber studio will be
open by appointment for
holiday shopping.
“The fleeces of our
lovely llamas each year pro-
vide beautiful, soft fiber,
which we carefully prepare
and work into a variety of
fiber art supplies and one-
of-a-kind wearable art crea-
tions,” said Joyce Abrams.
For hand-spinners, there
is clean, hand-carded rov-
ing; for knitters, yarn -- both
in a wide range of natural
colors. “For sewing, we
have needle-felted pin cush-
ions,” the business said.
“For special, one-of-a-
kind gifts, we have a selec-
tion of felted llama wool
hats and handbags that must
be seen, felt and tried on to
fully appreciate.
“Because llama fiber is
hollow or partially hollow, it
is very light for the amount
of insulation it provides.
“This makes for a soft,
light hat that is both warm
and water resistant, yet can
also be worn in warm
weather.”
Hat styles range from a
simple bowler with a small
brim to fedoras and Western
crowns with narrow-to-wide
brims. Handcrafted knit and
leather hatbands are also
available.
Handbags are created
from individual pieces of
hand-felted fabric, some in
solid colors, others marbled
in a combination of different
colored fibers. Each piece
suggests its unique form,
and unusual fabric linings
add to the designs. The gen-
tle llama fiber felt gives the
handbags a natural organic
feel to wear.
For those who wish to
make their own hat, Forest
Concealed-Carry Handgun Classes
being held right here in Cave Junction!
Edge Farm also offers its
popular Llama Felt Hat-
Making Workshop at vari-
ous times throughout the
year.
The day-long work-
shops begin with breakfast
during which participants
get to know one another,
then try on hats and select
the color fiber and hat style
they wish to make.
Besides the workshops
and items themselves, gift
certificates and custom or-
ders also are available.
Forest Edge Farm’s
studio, at 5489 Takilma
Road, is open by appoint-
ment. Phone 592-6078.

Blocks of stamps honor four ‘Distinguished Marines’
The U.S. Postal Service
has released a long-awaited
block of stamps titled
“Distinguished Marines”
marking the 230th anniver-
sary of the U.S. Marine
Corps, according to the Dept
of Veterans Affairs.
The stamps honor four
USMC heroes: Gunnery
Sgt. John Basilone, Sgt.
Maj. Daniel J. Daly, Lt.
Gen. John A. Lejeune and
Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty”
Puller, said the Dept of Vet-
erans Affairs.
Gunnery Sgt. John
Basilone, also known as
“Manila John,” fought on
Guadalcanal with the 1st
Marine Division in 1942
and was awarded the Medal
of Honor for his heroism.
Daly is one of only of
only two Marines in history
to twice receive the nation’s
highest military award -- the
Medal of Honor -- for sepa-
rate acts of heroism.
Lejeune was the first
Marine to command an
Army division and later be-
come commandant of the
Marine Corps.
Puller, known affection-
ately by all his fellow Ma-
rines as “Chesty,” was a
battalion commander and
regimental commander with
the 1st Marine Division dur-
ing World War II and the
Korean War, rising to the
grade of lieutenant general
in recognition of his service.
Each of the stamps fea-
tures a picture of the respec-
tive hero and the military
insignia of the military unit
with which he was most
identified.
Also, the U.S. Mint is
issuing the 2005 Marine
Corps 230th Anniversary
silver dollar. This is the first
time the United States has
honored a branch of the
military with a commemora-
tive coin.
Surcharges from the sale
of 2005 Marine Corps silver
dollars will be paid to the
Marine Corps Heritage Foun-
dation to help build the Na-
tional Museum of the Marine
Corps in Quantico, Va.
Information about the
commemorative Marine
Corps Silver Dollar is lo-
cated at the Website of the
U.S. Mint, usmint/
co mmunications/news/
promotions.htm.
What’s better on a cold day than a good book? You might
be surprised at what we actually have in this little branch.
We have even started a DVD collection.
During vacation, keep in mind you may renew your materi-
als over the phone or online. If you call after hours, leave a
message and we will renew your items when we are back.
Hope every one has a wonderful holiday! Don’t forget to
take a few moments to visit your local library on your way
to -- wherever.
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men
stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
