Page 13 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, October 26, 2005 Grant will allow state human services unit to study accidents in workplaces Oregon workplace ill- ness and injuries -- despite significant improvements -- remain an important issue, said Oregon Dept. of Hu- man Services (DHS). “In 2003, more than 20,000 Oregon workers suf- fered from work-related injuries and illnesses serious enough for them to miss at least three days of work,” said Dr. Mel Kohn, state epidemiologist in DHS. “Sadly, most of these events were preventable.” But now Oregon is get- ting another boost to en- hance the state’s ability to measure trends in workplace safety efforts in Oregon. Oregon is among 12 states to receive the com- petitively awarded grants. “This means we can systematically collect and analyze workplace injury and illness data from a vari- ety of government and pri- vate partners over time,” Kohn said. Partners in the effort to improve worker health and safety include Oregon OSHA and the Workers’ Compensation Division, both within the state Dept. of Consumer and Business Services (DCBS), as well as employers, industry groups, organized labor, insurance companies, health care or- ganizations and universities, Kohn said. Oregon has made sig- nificant improvements in workplace safety and health during the past 15 years, reducing injuries and ill- nesses in the private sector by more than 40 percent. A special session of the Legis- lature in 1990 adopted sev- eral reforms of Oregon’s workers compensation sys- tem, creating increased workplace injury and ill- nesses prevention services Detecting glaucoma vital for retaining good vision and reduced rates for work- ers compensation insurance. The average economic effect of a serious workplace injury is $43,000 -- while costs associated with a fatal accident can exceed $1 mil- lion, according to DCBS. “Workplace hazards not only take a human toll, but also pose an economic bur- den for workers, employers, and insurers,” said Kohn. Oregon data are in- cluded in a national report, “Putting Data to Work: Oc- cupational Health Indicators from 13 Pilot States for 2000,” just released by the Council for State and Terri- torial Epidemiologists, a professional organization of epidemiologists. Kohn said that the re- port provides a snapshot of the health of workers in Oregon, other participating states and the country. The full document is at cste.org. Sometimes, when the fluid reaches the angle, it passes too slowly through the meshwork drain, causing the pressure inside the eye to build. If the pressure dam- ages the optic nerve, open- angle glaucoma -- and vi- sion loss -- may result. There is no cure for glaucoma. Vision lost from the disease cannot be re- stored. However, there are treatments that may save remaining vision. That is why early diag- nosis is important. Glaucoma is detected through a comprehensive eye exam that includes a visual acuity test, visual field test, dilated eye exam, tonometry, and pachymetry. Although open-angle glaucoma cannot be cured, it usually can be controlled. While treatments may save remaining vision, they do not improve sight already lost from glaucoma. The most common treatments for glaucoma are medication and surgery. Medications for glau- coma may be either in the form of eye drops or pills. Some drugs reduce pressure by slowing the flow of fluid into the eye. Others help to improve fluid drainage. © 2005 DBR Media Inc. While glaucoma can strike anyone, the risk is much greater for people older than 60. There are several differ- ent types of glaucoma. Most involve the drainage system within the eye. At the front of the eye, there is a small space called the anterior chamber. A clear fluid flows through this chamber and bathes and nourishes the nearby tissues. In glaucoma, for still unknown reasons, the fluid drains too slowly out of the eye. As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye rises. Unless this pressure is controlled, it may cause damage to the optic nerve and other parts of the eye, and result in loss of vision. The most common type of glaucoma is called open- angle glaucoma. In the normal eye, the clear fluid leaves the ante- rior chamber at the open angle where the cornea and iris meet. When fluid reaches the angle, it flows through a spongy mesh- work, like a drain, and 592-6947 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>OCTOBER"30,"2005< 6:00 6:30 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 11:00 11:30 12:00 12:30 1:00 1:30 2:00 2:30 3:00 3:30 4:00 4:30 5:00 5:30 Movie: TTZ ‘‘Trapped’’ (2002) (PA) A mother Movie: TT ‘‘Needful Things’’ (1993, Horror) (PA) Max von Sydow, Ed Harris, Bonnie Bedelia.
