The name for the state of Kansas comes from
the Sioux word for “south wind people.”

Anaconda, Mont. - In Copperopolis, Mont.
during the Civil War, owners of the nearby cop-
per mine were strong supporters of the Union
cause. Late in the war, word reached them that
Gen. Grant’s troops were circling Gen. Lee’s
troops “like an anaconda,” To celebrate, they
changed the mine’s name to Anaconda, and the
town eventually followed suit.

Pullman, Wash. - The citizens of this com-
munity decided to name their town after George
M. Pullman, the rich manufacturer of the Pullman
Car, hoping he would shower his namesake with
new libraries and other civic gifts. When they
invited him to the ceremonies, he sent his regrets,
a nice thank you note and a check for $50. That
was the last the town heard from him.

Elephants
altruistic
In a resort on
Phuket, Thailand, one of
the most popular attrac-
tions is (was) elephant
rides.
As many as eight
people ride one elephant,
first into the surrounding
forest, then down to the
beach, to lunch at a
fresh-water lagoon, then
back to the hotel.
The elephants
(nine) were kept chained
to in-ground posts, not
because they needed to
be, but because it made
the mothers feel better as
their children seemed
safe from a tromping
when feeding the beasts.
Approximately 20
minutes before the first
wave hit, the elephants
became extremely agi-
tated and unruly. Four
had just returned from a
trip, and their handlers
had not yet chained
them. They helped the
other five tear free from
their chains.
They all then
climbed a hill and started
bellowing. Many people
followed them up the
hill. Then the waves hit.
After the waves sub-
sided, the elephants
charged down from the
hill, and started picking
up children with their
trunks and running them
back up the hill.
When all the chil-
dren were taken care of,
they started helping the
adults.
They rescued 42
people. Then, they re-
turned to the beach and
carried up four dead
bodies, one of them a
child. Not until the task
was done would they
allow their handlers to
mount them. Then, with
the handlers atop, they
began moving wreck-
age.

If you’re a renter with a dog, you
probably already know what a challenge it
can be to find a landlord, property manager
or condo association that will allow pets.
However, don't let this discourage you.
There are a number of actions you can take
to help make it easier to find a new home
for you and your dog.
It also helps to understand why certain
rental managers don’t allow pets or dogs in
particular.
Perhaps they had a bad experience
with a dog that barked too much and dis-
turbed the neighbors or destroyed carpet-
ing and floors. There may have been a past
incident with an aggressive dog.
Bearing this in mind, there are things
you can do to show that you're a responsi-
ble pet owner and that your dog is well-
trained and well-behaved.
*A letter from your current rental
manager or landlord can go a long way,
especially if it states that no property dam-
age was caused by your dog during your
stay. You should also have a letter from
your veterinarian indicating that you’ve

been a responsible dog owner by staying
on top of your dog’s medical care.
It would also be helpful if your vet
indicates that your dog is spayed/neutered
and free of fleas.
*If your dog has been to obedience
school or has had professional training, it
will demonstrate that your dog will be less
likely to misbehave.
*Introduce the owner to your dog. If
the landlord or rental manager is able to
see first-hand that your dog is trained and
well-behaved, he or she may be less dis-
missive. Be sure that your dog is nicely
groomed for the occasion.
*If you can, you might consider offer-
ing the rental manager a slightly higher
rent or an extra security deposit to use
against any damages that might occur as a
result of your dog.
The best policy is to be honest. Trying
to sneak your dog into a no-pets building
will only strengthen the rental manager’s
case against allowing pets. It could also
lead to a hefty fine or legal action.
