Work zones can prove deadly when
drivers fail to ‘give workers a brake’

*Following an unat-
tended motorcycle accident
at quarter to 3 a.m. on Pine-
wood Way, the unidentified
operator was cited on a
charge of DUII and given a
ride to his nearby residence.
*A man in his 20s,
whom the caller knew from
a stint in jail, came into his
home and took a watch
without permission, said a
man phoning from the
28000 block of Redwood
Hwy. at 5:22 a.m.
*James F. Carey, 29,
was cited on a charge of
failure to drive right near
mile-marker 25 of Redwood
Hwy. at 12:04 p.m.
*Jeremiah Berger, 12,
was arrested on a charge of
assault following an incident
at Lorna Byrne Middle
School at 2 p.m. Berger was
taken to the Juvenile Justice
Center in Grants Pass.
*Held up in traffic at a
construction zone near
Waldo and Rockydale roads
at 1:45 p.m., a red Thunder-
bird was identified as a sto-
len vehicle by a passer-by.
The driver then took off at
high speed, running over a
traffic controller’s foot. The
flagman also suffered an
injury to one hand, as he hit
the vehicle’s window,
smashing it. The driver was
ID’d by witnesses, but
eluded capture.
*Returning to her resi-
dence on Hogue Drive just
after 3 p.m., a woman saw a
person in dark clothing with
a backpack leaving a vacant
house nearby. The subject
had been seen in the area
previously, and the caller
was concerned that items
had been removed from the
home without permission.

Landers, 48, was cited on a
charge of driving while sus-
pended and warned for a
defective license plate light
on Redwood Hwy. at Caves
Hwy. at 11 p.m.
During June, the Ore-
gon Dept. of Transportation
(ODOT) McMinnville
maintenance and Salem
bridge crews were trimming
hazard trees along Hwy. 47
between McMinnville and
Carlton.
The work zone was es-
tablished with signs and
flaggers, and one lane of
traffic was closed.
Two hours into the op-
eration a semitruck and
trailer barreled through the
work zone and almost struck
a flagger and came within
five feet of crashing into the
ODOT boom truck. This
incident resulted in no inju-
ries or casualties, but it hap-
pens way too often on Ore-
gon highways, ODOT said.
Motorists are speeding
or not paying attention when
entering work zones.
“I looked up, and all I
saw was this tractor rig
coming right toward us, and
I didn’t think he was going
to stop,” said Transportation
Maintenance Coordinator
Greg Kiger. “By the time I
had yelled at Kevin, who
was working the boom, the
truck had stopped about 5
feet in front of the boom
truck from a speed of 55 to
60 mph.”
National studies indi-
cate driver attention being
diverted is the single biggest
problem. Excessive vehicle
speed is also a serious prob-
lem. Some 42 percent of
work zone crashes occur in
the transition prior to the
work area.
An average of approxi-
mately 10 work zone traffic-
related deaths and 400-450
crashes occur each year in
Oregon’s work zones.
There were nine work
zone traffic deaths and 412
work zone traffic crashes in
Oregon work zones during
1999. In 1000 and 2001
there were six work zone
traffic deaths.
During 2002 there was
another downward trend
with five work zone traffic
deaths. Then in 2003 there
were two work zone traffic
deaths, the lowest ever re-
corded.
But work zone traffic
deaths rose during 2004
with seven.
Nationally, there were
872 work zone deaths in
1999; 1,026 in 2000; 989 in
2001; 1,186 in 2002; and
1,028 in 2003 -- an overall
upward trend.
ODOT lists work zone
safety tips for drivers:
*Slow down, pay atten-
tion and stay calm. Work
zones aren’t there to incon-
venience drivers; they’re
there to improve the roads
for everyone.
*Merge as soon as pos-
sible. Motorists can help
maintain traffic flow and
posted speeds by moving to
the appropriate lane at first
notice of an approaching

*Try an alternate route.
*Expect delays and plan
for them. Leave early to

patching and mowing -- are

don’t see the workers imme-
diately after you see the
warning signs doesn’t mean
they’re not out there. Ob-
serve the posted signs until
you see the one that reads,
“End Road Work.”
