Expanded service noted at Pregnancy Center of I.V.
Mary Lefner first
learned about the Pregnancy
Center of the Illinois Valley
approximately five years
ago when Corinna Fierro
gave a ministry update at a
church attended by Lefner’s
parents.
Having been involved in
Alaska Right to Life efforts,
Lefner was thrilled to learn
about a place where tangible
assistance and honest educa-
tion about abortion were
being offered to women ex-
periencing pregnancy scares.
She began correspond-
ing with then-director Jenni-
fer Gowers.
Through a year-long
series of events, Lefner felt
that God was confirming a
release from her long-
standing position with the
Alaska Division of Public
Health.
She originally began
higher education at Rogue
Community College in
Grants Pass in 1980, and
always wanted to get back
to school and complete that
goal.
She now is working
toward her bachelor’s de-
gree in Biblical counseling
through a college distance
program.
She said that she has
used information from each
class when working with
clients, or planning and de-
veloping programs for the
Center. Many of her school
projects have directly bene-
fited the Pregnancy Center’s
how far this little pregnancy
center has come in three
years,” said Lefner. “When I
first arrived, the place was
only open two afternoons a

programs, including a pres-
entation on Fetal Alcohol
Syndrome, a client advocate
reference guide, volunteer
training approaches, and
providing counsel to clients.
“It is exciting to realize
week. Services were limited
to pregnancy testing, and the
Bridges to Motherhood pro-
gram had one client.”
During the past three
years, the Pregnancy Center
has expanded hours, en-
hanced its Bridges to Moth-
erhood program, and moved
to a larger facility. It has
added a formal post-
abortion healing program,
increased the number of
volunteers and supporters,
and expanded the board of
directors.
Lefner is working with
the board’s strategic plan to
stabilize funding, add new
services (including absti-
nence, a father’s program,
and better access to medical
care), expand the Bridges
Program even more, as well
as increasing Bible study
offerings.
Her desire is to help
people:
*Avoid pregnancy
scares, but also to work
through them and grow
when they occur.
*Know that God is real
and that He will be with you
through any situation.
*Help women and men
gain parenting skills and
truly enjoy the blessings
(children) that God has pro-
vided.
*Find freedom from
past-abortion pain.
Proverbs 11:14 has be-
come her favorite verse:
“Where there is no
guidance the people fall, but
in abundance of counselors,
there is victory.”

A man told his two sons to
work in the vineyard. The first
said, “No,” but later changed
his mind and did as he was
told. The other son said, “Yes,”
but never did the work.
That story told by Jesus in
Matthew will be related on the
26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
to show that even if we tell
God, “No,” we get a chance to
change our minds and do His
will to save our souls.
