ment for completing fuels reduction around
your own house. If you already receive assis-
tance from certain county or state agencies,
there’s a chance that up to 100 percent of the
cost to hire a contractor could be covered.
Did you know that most building materi-
als that enclose our families, pets, livestock,
neighbors and friends that have enabled us to
comfortably colonize the Illinois Valley can
be even more flammable and toxic than a
forest fire? That means such fires could burn
longer, hotter, and emit horribly toxic fumes
that could harm what is dear to us. Another
concern is the spread of fire from our homes
to the forests we all enjoy.
Did you know that you could be liable
for the cost to put out a wildfire? In other
words, it is our responsibility not only to pro-
tect ourselves from wildfire, but to protect
our forests from carelessness and neglect by
cleaning up and following seasonal burning
restrictions in the area on which we dwell.
With this mind, many locals have cre-
ated a “defensible space” around their homes
and outbuildings by removing and reducing
flammable materials. It offers a better chance
to make a stand, or worse case, evacuate. It
also gives firefighters incentive to “stick it
out” when the fire gets hot.
Cleaning roofs and gutters, raking leaves
and needles, and installing wire mesh in eave
openings seem to be a good place to start, but
most of our rural residents realize that the
yearly time invested is somewhat more ex-
tensive.
Those of us nestled deeply in the woods
can relate to the tremendous growth that
shrubs and trees parade each year, thanks to
warm summers followed by the mild, yet wet
seasons that follow. This means a little more
work for those of us who enjoy living in the
woods. Just as we weed our garden each
year, a certain amount of thinning and prun-
ing around our space in the forest is neces-
sary and acceptable.
As mentioned before, certain neighbor-
Smoke alarms save
Do you have smoke detectors in your
home? When did you last check the battery?
Did you take it out because it was beep-
ing? That tells you need a new battery.
How much is your life and the life of
your loved ones worth? Smoke detectors do
save lives, as an early warning that smoke is
in the house.
Do you have fire drills with the family
and pets? Do you know how they will re-
spond to the sound? Do you know where
they will go?
Do you have a fire extinguisher in your
home?
If you need help with these matters or
have other questions, phone I.V. Fire Dis-
trict: 592-2225.

hoods within the valley are pooling resources
and getting organized as a group. The think-
ing is: United, they have a chance to stand.
Divided the chance is diminished. Does your
family have an evacuation plan? Where
would you take livestock and pets? Is there a
safe place nearby that could accommodate
everyone trying to escape if only one way in/
out exists (preferably a large irrigated
meadow?) Who has the best-producing well
or access to a pond or creek?
A recent National Fire Plan grant re-
ceived and administered by the Illinois Val-
ley Community Development Organization
(IVCDO), with the help of I.V. Fire District
helped offset the costs of hazardous fuel re-
duction for several Selma residents. Approxi-
mately 41 households participated in the
“Thompson Creek” project that comprised
approximately 208 acres of fuel reduction
work. Work included defensible space
around dwelling areas, thinning along roads
and driveways, and shaded fuel breaks in key
locations throughout the neighborhood.
A key ingredient to the success of this
project was the willingness of the neighbor-
hood to get organized, have local meetings,
and collaborate with an enthusiastic and sup-
portive network of folks who know what
needs to be done and how to go about it.
Recognition is due participants within
the project area, I.V. Fire District, Bureau of
Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Ore-
gon Dept. of Forestry, Josephine County In-
tegated Fire Plan partners, Josephine County
Planning/GIS, Jackson/Josephine Job Coun-
cil (especially those young women and gen-
tleman who took the initiative to get a sum-
mer job locally and learn more about the
woods), Selma Community Center, Lomaka-
tsi Restoration Project, Dennis Page Forestry,
and Surgeon General Steve Schiffman.
There will be an open house at 5:30 p.m.
and a meeting at 6:30 to discuss the Deer
Creek Fire and how to protect your property
on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Selma Fire
Station, 18455 Redwood Hwy.
