SAR ‘Citizens Academy’
2 weekends in October
There is room for 40
students in the four-day Jo-
sephine County Sheriff’s
Patrol Search & Rescue
Unit “Citizens Academy.”
It is scheduled for two
consecutive weekends: Oct.
1-2, and Oct. 8-9. The acad-
emy will be held at the SAR
facility at 250 Tech Way in
the North Valley Industrial
Park in Merlin from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m.
The curriculum will
provide a thorough introduc-
tion to SAR, meeting the
state’s minimum training
requirements.
The academy will cover
map and compass, global
positioning systems, man-
tracking, wilderness sur-
vival, radio communica-
tions, search techniques,
first aid/CPR, cold weather
emergencies, helicopter
safety, crime-scene preser-
vation and a variety of other
subjects. The academy is
open to all interested citi-
zens at $5 per student.
Students must be at
least 14, with no maximum
age, and no prior experience
necessary.
Academy graduates will
qualify for membership
within the Josephine County
SAR Reserve. Reservists are
activated for large-scale
searches, supplementing
active-duty SAR personnel.
The Reserve program is
a recent addition to the
county SAR Unit. Current
plans call for a target Re-
serve pool of 100 members ,
with an estimated six to 10

Academy graduates
wishing to be considered for
active-duty SAR member-
ship may apply at the con-
clusion of the course. The
application process includes
a background check, a mod-
erate physical fitness test,
and an interview process.
For those accepted,
there is a trial service period,
additional required training,
and minimum attendance
requirements.
Active-duty SAR mem-
bers also receive training on
a variety of snow craft, wa-
tercraft, and several types of
specialized off-road vehi-
cles. Advanced training is
available for qualified mem-
bers wishing to participate
in rope and wilderness res-
cue, in conjunction with
American Medical Re-
sponse’s Ranch and Treat
(RAT) team.
There also are specialty
sub-units of SAR. They in-
clude a K-9 search team, a
swiftwater rescue team, and
an urban SAR team, trained
for structural collapse res-
cue. SAR also sponsors an
Explorers post for those 14-
20.
SAR is an all-volunteer
unit, funded entirely through
community donations and
grants.
It is the primary search
agency for the county, and
actively participate in a vari-
ety of rescues and large-
scale emergencies, as well
as numerous community
events.

After the closing of a
real estate transaction earlier
this year, an old, familiar
place has been graced with
new faces.
But new owners haven’t
stayed strangers long.
Jimmy and Salina Su,
previously of Sacramento,
purchased the O’Brien
Country store from Gary
and Ethel Moore, who oper-
ated the store for more than
22 years.
“My wife looked in a
real estate booklet and saw
this store for sale, and we
thought it looked interest-
ing,” said Jimmy. “So we
came up and looked at it,
loved it and decided to buy
it. We didn't plan it.
“We weren’t even look-
ing to do something like
this. It just happened,”
Jimmy explained.
“I had two properties in
Sacramento that went up a
lot in value, so we did a
1031 exchange,” he said,
“and we were able to get
into this property. I figured
with the business, I’d be
able to slow my life a lot.”
While their busy sched-
ules may have slowed sig-
nificantly, Jimmy said that
he and Salina were very
much occupied with getting
settled in.
“We’ve been pretty
busy,” he said. “We just
wake up, open the store,
work all day, and then go to
sleep. There’s living quar-
ters upstairs.
“We have two employ-
ees; and my wife and I work
full time. We didn’t let any-
one go, and we’re not add-

would have had time to do
before, he added.
Since he was 18, he’s
worked concurrently a mini-
mum of two jobs and a
maximum of four jobs. At
one point or another, he was
running his father’s chicken
farm, working for UPS, Al-
bertson’s, Ralph’s, a mini-
mart and doing odd jobs
such as being a sushi chef
and a newspaper delivery-
man.
Salina received a bache-
lor of science degree in bio-
chemistry and worked many
hours as a technician at a
pathology lab in Sacra-
mento.
Jimmy was born and
raised in Sacramento. He
moved to Florida for a short
period of time where he
worked as a sushi chef. His
wife, he said, was born in
Vietnam, but her family
moved to Sacramento when
she was 5 or 6, and she had
lived there since.
“She’s OK with the
move,” said Jimmy. “She
was still a little homesick,
but I’m OK since I’ve al-
ready moved away once
before (to Florida),” he said.

The store is open 8 to 8
Mondays through Satur-
days, and 9 to 7 Sundays.

either. We’re keeping every-
thing just the way it is for
now,” Jimmy said.
For this young couple,
buying the store has been a
life-changing experience,
they said.
“I was working 15 to 16
hours a day, seven days a
week,” said Jimmy. “We
were both working two jobs.
Moving here made it possi-
ble for us to slow down our
lives and start a family. We
love children and want to
way it is.
That’s because the rea-
sons they fell in love with
the business in the first place
include a railroad caboose,
1950s police car and the
1929 post office inside the
store.
“We just mainly loved
the store,” said Jimmy. “But
for me it was the fishing
pond that’s hidden away.
For my wife, it was the
small town where we can
start a family.”
