(Photo by Dale & Elaine Sandberg/IVFD photographers) Sheriff’s office volunteers cook uniform fund-raiser The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office volunteers need community help. This unit has, for the past 10 years, assisted the sheriff’s office in crime prevention and community education. They handle several jobs within the sheriff’s office that allows deputies to handle the more urgent work. Last year they donated more then 9,000 hours and saved the community ap- proximately $180,000, said Deputy Rich McMillen, crime prevention officer. “This unit has an aver- age membership of 35 peo- ple, mostly made up of retired citizens who want to serve their community,” he said. “The unit mem- bers have received several Presidential Volunteer ser- vice awards and letters of appreciation locally and nationally.” The unit has been working for the past year to raise funds to update its uniforms. This is needed to allow volunteers to be rec- ognized as they go about their assigned duties in the community. During the past year they have held garage sales, sold sheriff’s office belt buckles and blankets. They need to raise $6,000 more to provide each member with the proper uniform. The volunteer unit has put together a cook book with personal and favorite recipes from sheriff’s of- fice personnel and friends. The book hold more than 250 pages of recipes and is available at the sheriff’s main office. Phone McMillen at (541) 474-5136 for more information.
