In 1856, three school districts were formed, and others were added until 1911. There was Kerby, Dryden, O’Brien, Payne, Spence, White School Dis- trict, etc. Shortly after 1900, Kerby High School was added to Kerby Grade School, and the first graduat- ing class was one girl. In 1923, Kerby District consolidated, with all outly- ing districts, into a union district that came to be known as Kerby Union High School. The first graduating class was in 1924. The years of 1924 through 1949 saw many historical events. The hard, economic times of the Great Depression brought forth stories of striving for family survival; for others, the little farms and ranches of the Illinois Valley provided food and resources to see CONCERTS IN THE PARK will conclude the summer program Thursday, Aug. 4 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Jubi- lee Park with the Emmons Sisters and their Bluegrass music. Performers during last week’s concert were John Karsemeyer, of Glen Ellen, Calif., and Dale Hop- per, of O’Brien. Karsemeyer and Hopper played in a band, ’Valley of the Moonshiners,’ for 25 years. Their music inspired Cave Junction residents Lydia and Phil Parker to get up and cut a rug. The annual series is sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce. In the early years, some rode horses, drove Model T’s, and others moved close enough to the school to walk. Many roomed and boarded with Kerby families just to attend school. Later, students paid gas money to ride to school with fellow students in their cars. World War II saw sad- ness for families whose loved ones went off to fight (many were KUHS students and grads), and some did not come back. After the war, the valley blossomed Chamber board meet Aug. 9 Forestry Action Committee (FAC) FAC is conducting the summer component of its mushroom monitoring pro- gram. Monitors laid transects last Matsutake season in known production areas, and areas that are raked a lot. They tracked soil tem- perature and moisture con- tent, level of ground distur- bance and fungal activity, and identified all mush- rooms that appeared within the transects. We have a monitor this year named Robert Stone, who lives in rural Cave Junction. Because he is lo- cal, we are now able to con- duct year-round monitoring. Once monthly through summer he measures soil temperature and moisture content with the transects so that we can more fully un- derstand the effect of sum- mer soil conditions on the fall Matsutake harvest. During September/ October, before the season starts, he will be able to re- cord initial Matsutake activ- ity and raking disturbances. The Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will meet publicly Tuesday, Aug. 9 at noon at Wild River Brewing & Pizza Co. in Cave Junction. Agenda items include a review of the Siskiyou Bluegrass Festival, July 30, and plans for the third annual golf tournament Aug. 27 at Laurel Pines Golf Course in Cave Junc- tion. with optimism and industry. The last KUHS graduat- ing class was in 1949. Good times were had at this high school, and former students and residents say the Illinois Valley was the ideal place to live and go to school. The district was fortu- nate to have many excellent teachers. This was reflected by the success of many stu- dents who attended this little school in Southern Oregon. Many thanks to the kids who participated in our Summer Read- ing Programs and to sponsors who have made the Summer Reading Programs a success. Both programs will end at 5pm on August 1st. We will post how many kids participated and how many books were read in the September Bookworm. Speaking of September, the IV Friends of the Library have set Friday, Sept. 23 for their annual Book Sale. Presale, available to Friends members, is 5-7p.m. on the 23rd.
