BLM lists road closures, repairs in area
While summer is a per-
fect time to get outdoors and
enjoy the sunshine, it also
provides engineers opportuni-
ties to work on roads to pro-
vide better access for the pub-
lic.
Following is a descrip-
tion of coming road work on
Medford District Bureau of
Land Management (BLM)
roads in Illinois Valley.
*The culvert on Thomp-
son Creek Road, (BLM Road
#38-7-27, off Lakeshore Drive
east of Selma), is scheduled to
be replaced with a fish-
friendly arch. Traffic will be
rerouted around the site via
Forest Creek Road from ap-
proximately July 1 through
Sept. 1.
*The Bear Camp/Galice
Access Road, the primary
route between the coast and
Galice, is still blocked by a
rock slide. The Peavine/
Serpentine Route is closed at
milepost 6.0 for reconstruc-
tion.
Due to a wet spring and
cooler than normal tempera-
tures, the road reconstruction
may not be completed until
the end of August. Note there
is two-way traffic on Peavine
Road to the junction of the
Peavine Lookout Road (24-8-
28). Alternate detour routes
are still in effect.
The alternate routes are
signed, and include one-way
traffic patterns. On the routes
with homes, one-way traffic
patterns will begin past the
last residence, to allow resi-
dents access to their homes.
Due to low overhanging
tree branches, the routes are
not recommended for trailers,
motor homes, or oversized
vehicles.
Recommended alternate
routes include Hwy. 199,
called the most preferable
route for recreational vehicles
and vehicles towing trailers,
or those unaccustomed to
driving on winding, mountain
roads with one lane traffic.
Motorists take Hwy. 199
and then travel north on Hwy.
101 to the coast.
CB users can tune to
channel 10 to monitor traffic
on these routes. Agency offi-
cials ask all travelers to drive
with vehicle lights on and
drive safely.
Longtime performer
Kevin Hagen, perhaps best
known for his 10-year role as
“Doc Baker” on the “Little
House on the Prairie” TV
series, died at home overlook-
ing the Rogue River in Grants
Pass Saturday, July 9, 2005,
according to a family friend.
Cremation is planned for
the veteran actor, who died of
esophageal cancer.
Mr. Hagen was born on
April 3, 1927 in Chicago, Ill.
He was well-known through-
out Josephine County, includ-
ing Illinois Valley, because of
his volunteer fund-raising
performances for many or-
ganizations. He also was a
favorite with children and
adults because of his engag-
ing, caring personality.
A private memorial ser-
vice will be held Sunday, July
17. Remembrances can be
sent to Lovejoy Hospice in
Grants Pass. Any flowers that
are sent will be taken to the
oncology section of Three
Rivers Community Hospital
after the memorial. They can
be sent to 1706 Blue Moon
Lane, Grants Pass 97527.
Mr. Hagen’s versatile
career included stage plays in
Hollywood’s version of Off-
Broadway. He played “Doc
Baker” from 1974 to 1984.
He appeared on “Dragnet,”
and he also had roles on
“Land of the Giants” and
“Yancey Derringer.”
He is survived by his
wife, Jan, of Grants Pass,
known in Illinois Valley as a
teacher for the past 14 years;
and a son, Kristopher Hagen,
of California.

On the 16th Sunday in
Ordinary Time we will read
in Matthew the parable of the
man who sowed good seed,
and an enemy who sowed
weeds in the same field.
Jesus used the parable to
describe the Son of Man sow-
ing seed in the world, with
the enemy being the devil and
the weeds his children.
Good Shepherd Lutheran
Elaine Machado was guest
speaker Sunday, with a mes-
sage on the parable of seed
planted in different types of
soil.
Just as seed planted in
hard, rocky or thorn-infested
soil will not grow properly, so
it is with God’s word.
