Civil unions bill
in House hands
CALENDAR CALL - Monday, July 18 is the dead-
line to either take advantage of the new “Noose” Commu-
nity Calendar by purchasing a border ad to advertise busi-
nesses; or buying space on the calendar days to publicize
car washes, dances, bingo games, various fund-raisers,
concerts, potlucks, birthdays, anniversaries, special mes-
sages, or whatever. The price for the calendar days is only
$4 for three lines, and $1.50 for each additional line.
Prices of the remaining border ads can be obtained from
Nina Holm at 592-2541. The Community Calendar, de-
signed to be posted in public places and on refrigerators,
will be published in the last issue of each month to high-

great price: We’re hoping that many will take advantage.

LAST WORDS - My choice early in life was to be a
piano-player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell
the truth, there’s hardly any difference. (President Harry

The Oregon Senate voted
19-10 Friday, July 8 to ap-
prove SB 1000, which would
establish civil unions for
same-sex couples.
It would prohibit dis-
crimination based on sexual
orientation in housing, em-
ployment, public accommo-
dations and public services.
The bill must be ap-
proved by the House of Rep-
resentatives before it reaches
the desk of Gov. Kulongoski.

While one held the patrons
at gunpoint, the other de-

money from the register and
the video poker machines.
After taking the money,
both men exited the busi-

amount of currency and left
the area, said GPDPS.

Driver cited following accident in O’Brien
Cave Junction resident
Mary Lou Kastens, 57, was
cited on a charge of driving
under the influence of in-
toxicants following a single-
vehicle crash in O’Brien,
said Josephine County Sher-
iff’s Office (JCSO).
The crash was reported
at approximately 5:43 p.m.
Wednesday, July 6 on Lone
Mt. Road near Naue Way.
Kastens and her passen-
ger, Kevin J. Christiansen,
45, were taken by American
Medical Response to Three
Rivers Community Hospi-
tal. They were examined for
complaints including a pos-
sible broken ankle and chest
pain.
The pickup truck in
which they were riding went
off the road, said Illinois
Valley Fire District (IVFD),
and struck an embankment,
approximately 6 inches
short of a tree.
IVFD added that if the
pickup had left the road
some 15 feet earlier, it’s
likely that the vehicle would
have rolled. As it was, the
pickup was tilted to the pas-
senger side with the left-rear
tire in the air, said IVFD.

allow such extreme terror
on the other, and still try
to buy credibility with
that coin? I ask the world
leaders, and shame on
each and everyone of
them in this regard, what
kind of change is in their
pockets?
To those unaware of
the atrocities of which I
speak, I urge a look at the
movies, “Tears of the
Sun,”
and
“Hotel
Rwanda.” A strong stom-
ach is advised. There are
also web sites (from what
I understand), one being
Amnesty
Interna-
tional.org. I’m sure that
clicking on Sudan, Af-
rica, Rwanda or genocide
will probably show the
heart-wrenching statistics
o f th e mo d e r n - d a y
slaughtering of humanity.
Anyone claiming any
religious affiliation in-
volving a loving, forgiv-
ing God should be moti-
vated to speak out against
this horror. Anyone not
claiming any affiliation to
religious ideologies, but
are loving, caring human
beings of any degree,
should if possible, speak
out against this turning of
the back on our brothers
and sisters, many of
whom will have been
murdered by the time this
letter will be read.
I have no idea how to
stop this continuing mis-
ery other than to make
people aware of it, and
perhaps by encouraging
our state representatives
to also speak out.
Does U.N. stand for
Useless Nations? Is the
human species a liar unto
itself, reduced to nothing
more than a bunch of
over-dressed monkeys?
I think -- well, I
would surely like to think
not. Is genocide, suicide?
I believe so.
