Formations inside Oregon Caves National Monument, approximately 22 miles east of Downtown Cave Junction, attract much attention:
Banana Grove (left photo) and Miller’s Chapel (right photo) are among cave features. The caves were discovered in 1874 by Elijah Davison, a hunter, who
entered in a search for his dog, which had pursued a bear. Davison was deep in the cave when his matches ran out. However, he knew enough to follow a
stream, and so emerged safely sometime later. The monument is operated by the National Park Service. The
famous Chateau is operated by a concessionaire, Oregon Caves Outfitters, based in Cave Junction. For most of the summer season, cave tours are given
hourly from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The temperature is a constant 42 degrees F. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to take the complete tour. However,
an abbreviated tour is available. Child-care is not provided. For information about tours, phone the I.V. Visitor Center in Cave Junction, or phone 592-
4076. For information about the Chateau accommodations and its two restaurants, phone 592-3400. (Photos by Dennis Strayer)
