Wilma White
A service for former long-
time Cave Junction resident
Wilma White, 92, of Vancou-
ver, Wash., who died Thurs-
day, May 26, 2005, was held
June 4 at Illinois Valley Fu-
neral Home in Cave Junction.
She had lived in Vancouver for
five years.
Mrs. White was born on
June 30, 1912 in Grove, Okla.
A 40-year resident of Illinois
Valley, she moved here in
1960 from Los Angeles. She
and Bea Kline, childhood
friends in Oklahoma, moved to
L.A. in their 20s and eventually
married. Both couples relo-
cated to Cave Junction in 1960.
The Klines are former owners
of Holiday Motel in Kerby.
Mrs. White’s first hus-

Minniear, owned Doc’s Ma-
chine Shop in Cave Junction.
She married Gordon White in
1968.
She was employed at
Home Valley Bank for 14
years, and was a member of
Illinois Valley Golf Club. Mrs.
White was past president of the
I.V. Golf Association Board of
Directors, and she was a mem-
ber of Immanuel United Meth-
odist Church. She also worked
for Bob Lewis Insurance in
Cave Junction.
She enjoyed horseback
riding, golf, gardening, and her
many friends.
She is survived by a son,
William Minniear, of Vancou-
ver; four granddaughters; and
six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her husbands, William
Minniear, and Gordon White;
and one granddaughter.
‘Lucky’ Deaton
Brent “Lucky” Deaton,
87, a 43-year resident of Cave
Junction, died at home Mon-
day, May 30, 2005.
A funeral service will be
held. Southern Oregon Crema-
tion Services is in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Deaton was born on
Feb. 19, 1918 in Byars, Okla.
He married Dora Daude on
Dec. 24, 1937. He moved from
New Mexico to Cave Junction
43 years ago.
Besides his wife, Dora
Deaton, of Cave Junction, he is
survived by two sons, Marian
Deaton, of Cave Junction, and
Darry Deaton, of Gaithersburg,
Md.; a daughter, Joy Hoskins,
of Cave Junction; a brother,
Colvin Deaton, of Albany,
Ore.; 10 grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren.

Controlling invasive insects in Oregon
involves traps, plus plain observation
It’s the Oregon Dept. of
Agriculture’s (ODA) ver-
sion of the Roach Hotel.
Various traps are placed
throughout the state in
which invasive species of
insects check in, but they
don’t check out.
From gypsy moth to
Japanese beetle, ODA sur-
vey technicians will set up
thousands of traps during
the next several weeks as
part of a massive program to
detect the kinds of bugs
Oregon doesn’t want.
“We try to keep inva-
sive insects out of the state,
but sometimes they do slip
in,” said Kathleen Johnson,
supervisor of ODA’s Insect
Pest Prevention and Man-
agement Program. “So our
goal is early detection of
these unwanted species.”
More than 19,000 bright
orange or green tent-like
cardboard boxes will be
hanging in trees in hopes of
snaring male gypsy moths
this summer.
Another 6,000 or so
Japanese beetle traps are
being placed in Oregon
along with approximately
5,000 traps designed to cap-
ture various fruit and vege-
table pests.
In addition, ODA sur-
vey technicians will conduct
visual inspection of trees
and plants for invasive in-
sect species for which there
aren’t any effective traps --
Asian long-horned beetle,
emerald ash borer, and the
brown marmorated stink
bug, recently discovered in
Oregon for the first time.
“The threat from inva-
sive species from around the
world and other parts of the
United States has increased
markedly over the years,”
said Johnson. “We now set
traps for about 25 different
insect species.”
A provision champi-
oned by U.S. Sen. Ron Wy-
den (D-Ore.) for a federal
advocate to protect the inter-
ests of U.S. energy consum-
ers was included in the Sen-
ate's comprehensive energy
legislation.
The provision, which
would establish an inde-
pendent consumer advocate
to be appointed by the secre-
tary of energy, is part of the
energy bill being considered
by the U.S. Senate Commit-
tee on Energy and Natural
Resources.
Wyden offered amend-
ment language for such an
advocate when energy legis-
lation was considered by
Congress during 2002, as
Oregonians reeled from
price spikes and “energy
market manipulation by En-
ron,” he said.
He has long been con-
cerned that wholesale en-
ergy transactions, which
often occur between and
among states, are causing
higher electric bills for
Americans.
“This provision will at
last give American energy
consumers an independent
watchdog to protect their
interests by ensuring reliable
service and preventing un-
necessary price spikes,” said
Wyden. “Oregonians have
been shellacked by bad ac-
tors like Enron in the past,
and the creation of this posi-
tion will give them a strong
advocate in Washington for
their interests.”
