Predators hit
in House bill
‘KICK UP YOUR HEELS’ - On Thursday, June 9
at 6:30 p.m., “a ton of fun” is offered at Selma Commu-
nity Center with English and Scottish country dance in-
struction. The dances are the predecessors to American
square dancing. The low-impact activity, with every
dance taught and called (so experience is not necessary),
is for singles or couples. Dancing will continue on sec-
ond and fourth Thursdays.
SMALL BUSINESS HELP - A 10-week course,
“Planning and Managing a Small Business,” will begin
Wednesday, June 15 at Selma Community Center. The
course, from 6 to 9 p.m., will cover all aspects of running a
small business including marketing, finance, bookkeeping
basics, legal requirements, and other skills needed to suc-
ceed, said Illinois Valley Community Development Or-
ganization (IVCDO). There is a small fee. The instructor is
David Tally, of the SOWAC Microenterprise Development
Center. The class is co-sponsored by SOWAC and
IVCDO. The deadline to enroll is Monday, June 13. Phone

JUNIOR GOLF - Time again for Junior Golf at Illi-
nois Valley Golf Course. Sign-ups will be conducted Satur-
day, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the course. Six weeks
of lessons will begin on Thursday, June 23.
HEALTH WEALTH - Free preventive health screen-
ing will be provided Saturday, June 25 during the seventh
annual Classic & Antique Car Show in Jubilee Park. The
Cave Junction Lions Club, show sponsor, has worked for
two years to get the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foun-
dation mobile health screening unit to visit at the same
time. The free screening will encompass visual acuity,
hearing, blood pressure, glaucoma, and diabetes for adults,
and minors with written parental permission. All five
screenings usually can be provided in less than 20 minutes.
The diabetes screening requires that the person not eat or
drink anything other than water or black coffee for at least
three hours prior.
CJ Lions Club wants to be sure the community knows
that this year’s show is a two-day affair. Friday, June 24,
will feature a poker run for all comers, plus a barbecue
lunch; and a barbecue dinner followed by a dance with live
music, all at Jubilee Park. (Check the ad in this issue.)
JESSI COLTER COMING - Country music star
Jessi Colter, widow of Waylon Jennings, is coming to Illi-
nois Valley to perform Sept. 5 during the Illinois Valley
Lions Club Festival in Jubilee Park. She’s known for such
hits as, “I’m Not Lisa,” “Suspicious Minds,” and “I’m
Looking for Blue Eyes.” There will not be an admission
charge. Her appearance is due to the fact that I.V. resident
Wayne Whitfield is a cousin of Jennings, and knew him for
many years.
SARA McDONALD GONE - Sara McDonald, ex-
ecutive director for the Josephine County Commission on
Children & Families, left the job Tuesday, June 7, said the
JoCo Board of Commissioners. She has accepted a
position as senior policy adviser to the Marion County
Board of Commissioners in Salem. “Sara has put her heart
and soul into helping needy children and families in our
county, and she will be sorely missed,” said the JoCo
board. “We wish her well in her new position. Our tremen-
dous loss is Marion County’s gain,” the board added. The
Commission on Children & Families will remain active,
and Janet Bell will be available to address questions or con-
cerns.
NOTEPAD - A silent auction to benefit the Illinois
Valley High School cheerleaders is under way. Items are in
the IVHS main office, and will be until Tuesday, June 14
… “Southern Oregon Blues Band” from Illinois Valley
will play at Ship Ashore Resort in Smith River, Calif. on
Saturday, June 11 beginning at 8 p.m. Their appearance
will cap Active Living Expo II at the resort, with many
booths and lots of information, beginning at 9 a.m. with a
free continental breakfast … Prescribed burns by the
Bureau of Land Management have been conducted re-
cently in the I.V. and Grants Pass areas. They will con-
tinue, depending on weather. For updates on BLM burns,
phone (800) 267-3126 … Ways to annoy others: *In an
elevator say, “Did you guys hear that cable-snapping
noise?” *Ask people to prove everything they say. *Race
turtles on the main street of town. *Sing the “Barney
Theme” as loudly as you can while waiting for a bank
teller. *When the temperature hits record highs ask every-
one, “Hot enough for you?”

A MEMORIAL TO THE UNBORN was dedicated Mon-
day evening, June 6, at the Pregnancy Center of the
Illinois Valley. Participants included Charles Bridges,
who offered an opening prayer and blessing, and other
members of the Pregnancy Center Board of Directors.
Mothers with unborn children can place a memorial
stone at the location. The center offers a counseling
and healing service for mothers who have experienced
abortions, stillbirths or miscarriages. Bridges cited
Joshua 4:4-7 as part of the ceremony in memory of the
children. It was noted that many women experience
the loss of children prior to birth, and that the center
can help provide closure.
Legislation to protect
children from sexual preda-
tors by making it a crime for
known sexual offenders to
be in a location where chil-
dren congregate was passed
by the Oregon House Fri-
day, June 3.
House Speaker Karen
Minnis said that House Bill
3469 establishes two new
Class C felony crimes. They
affect sexually dangerous
offenders, predator sexual
offenders, and sentenced
dangerous offenders upon
conviction of a sex crime in
Oregon or another jurisdic-
tion.
The first crime, said
Minnis, is unlawfully being
in a location where children
regularly congregate. The
second crime is unlawful
contact with a child.
A Class C felony is
punishable by a maximum
fine of up to five years in
prison, and a maximum fine
of up to $100,000. The new
crimes would apply to of-
fenses committed on or after
Jan. 1, 2006.
