Page 13 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, May 11, 2005 Money available to help growers be certified as ‘organic’ Oregon’s organic grow- ers slowly but surely are finding their niche, although conventional agriculture still represents more than 98 percent of all farms and ranches in the state. And, added Oregon Dept. of Agriculture (ODA), some federal funds are available this spring to help offset the cost of becoming certified “organic,” as now required by U.S. law. ODA has $105,600 to offer as cost-share $500 maximum reimbursements to any Oregon organic grower, handler or processor certified by a USDA- accredited certifier through Sept. 30, 2008. For more information, phone (503) 872-6600. For the first time, statis- tics from the U.S. Census of Agriculture contain some basic data about the size and scope of Oregon’s organic farming community. Of the state’s approximately 40,000 farms, only 515 are certified organic producers -- only 1.3 percent. The value of certified organically produced com- modities is $9.9 million, said ODA, which is ap- proximately 0.26 percent of the state’s total ag produc- tion value of $3.8 billion. ODA said that products such as organic milk are increasingly in demand to make organic cheese, as well as for organic grains to bake bread. Plus, organi- cally grown products for use by farmers markets, retail markets and some food ser- vice operations are being asked for more frequently. Patriot Act requires background checks for haz-mat renewals As of May 31, Oregon DMV will not renew haz- ardous materials endorse- ments with commercial driver license renewals without a background check, DMV officials an- nounced. Under USA Patriot Act regulations, all CDL holders must submit fingerprints to obtain security clearance from the U.S. Transporta- tion Security Administration before issuance or renewal of a commercial driver li- cense that includes a hazmat endorsement. Commercial drivers must obtain an Oregon CDL (if they do not already have one) prior to applying for a background check and sub- mitting fingerprints and fees, said DMV. The background check will be conducted by a pri- vate contractor, Integrated Biometric Technologies (IBT), approved by the fed- eral Transportation Safety Administration. IBT will gather information from the applicant, collect the back- ground check fees and fin- gerprints.
