Felony assault suspect, 18, arrested
Josephine County Sher-
iff’s Office (JCSO) has arrested
an 18-year-old suspect in con-
nection with first-degree felony
assault in Cave Junction on
Thursday night, April 14.
The suspect, who was
taken to county jail, is Teo
Rasmussen, of 310 W. Lister
St., said Det. Sgt. Ken Selig.
The victim, who suffered
apparent severe head injuries,
was identified as a transient,
James Guy Bennett, 46.
Bennett was tended at the
scene, on Watkins Street just
short of Junction Avenue, at
approximately 8:30 p.m. after
an anonymous caller on a cell
phone reported a man down.
Deputies, and medics from
American Medical Response
(AMR) and Illinois Valley Fire
District found the victim un-
conscious and losing blood.
He suffered a deep lacera-
tion to his right eye, three bro-
ken veterbrae, and possible
swelling of his brain, said
Selig. Bennett first was taken
by AMR to a hospital in Grants
Pass, where he was reported by
JCSO in serious condition.
Bennett later was flown to
Oregon Health Science Univer-
sity in Portland, and was re-
ported in fair condition early

Selig said that officers
from the Major Crimes Unit
learned that Rasmussen “had
been in the area of the attack
just prior to law enforcement
arriving.” He was contacted at
home, and “told investigators
he assaulted Bennett because
he threatened him a week ear-
lier.”
Selig said that the victim
“is a well-known homeless
person known to drink heavily
and wander the streets and
parks of Cave Junction. Ras-
mussen said he struck Bennett,
knocking him to the ground.
“Bennett,” continued Selig
based on the suspect’s com-
ments, “was intoxicated (his
blood alcohol level was .33)
and did not resist. He was
kicked repeatedly by Rasmus-
sen about the face and head.”
According to sources on
the street, the victim has been
in Cave Junction approxi-
mately two months. Because of
his assault, and another on a
transient not long ago in Cave
Junction, street people are
concerned about their safety.
One homeless man, whose
tent and all his belongings were
burned last week, is among
those worried about their wel-
fare.
Another CJ street person
said, “I don’t like guns. But I
wish I had one now, especially
after dark.”
TRSD looks at
lack of money
for 2005-‘07
How best to handle ap-
proximately $2 million total
in estimated reductions dur-
ing the next two fiscal years
because of declining income
is being examined at Three
Rivers School District
(TRSD).
The district board re-
viewed the situation during
its meeting Monday night,
April 11 at Williams Ele-
mentary School. It then con-
ducted a workshop on the
matter at the district office
in Murphy Thursday night,
April 14.
During the first go-
round, directors were not
keen on a proposal that in-
cluded cutting eight school
days. It also did not like cuts
including a half-time assis-
tant principal from Illinois

Wednesday, April 6
*Following a non-injury,
two-vehicle “fender bender” at
CJ Select Market’s parking lot,
the parties exchanged informa-
tion and a report of property
damage was filed.
*Two people on W. Wat-
kins Street were advised of a
Cave Junction ordinance
against selling from the back of
a vehicle.
*Logan Jay Wargin, 27,
was cited on a charge of im-
proper vehicle tag display and
warned for an improper left
turn.
*On Bonanza Drive a man
reported seeing people in two
vehicles throwing dog biscuits
from the windows as they
drove down the road. The
caller felt the people were pos-
sibly casing the neighborhood.

Elementary School, Jubilee
Park, Illinois Valley Library,
Shop Smart Food Warehouse,

station, Illinois River “Forks”
State Park, O’Brien General
Store and McGrew’s Tavern --
all within 40 minutes between
2:08 a.m. and 2:43 a.m.
*Although a deputy was
unable to locate two youths
who disappeared into some
brush near the east entrance to
Illinois Valley High School,
the officer did discover a clear-
ing which “appeared to be used
frequently for illegal activity.”
*Damage totaling $800
occurred when an unknown
subject struck a vehicle parked
at Shop Smart, a man said.
Friday, April 8
*Some $100 worth of
potted plants were taken, tulips
damaged and ashtrays stolen
from Wild River Brewing &
Pizza Co. an employee said at
9:23 a.m.
*Approximately $3,000
worth of tools were taken from
a construction business, the
owner reported.
*Arrested on two warrants
charging failure to appear on
charges of DUII, Kevin Jeffery
Brittain, 38, was cited to appear
in Josephine County Court.
*Tools valued at $330
were reported taken from a
location on Dogwood Lane.
*James Russell Hinds II,
28, was arrested on a warrant
charging FTA on a charge of
menacing. He was also charged
with first-degree theft and sec-
ond-degree burglary; and
lodged in Josephine County
Jail.
*Following a traffic stop
on S. Kerby Avenue, John
Michael Hergenrether, 29, was
lodged in Josephine County
Jail on a warrant charging FTA
on a charge of possession of a
precursory substance. He was
also charged with driving while
suspended (DWS), and posses-
sion of a controlled substance,
(PCS) methamphetamine.
